HPE ProLiant ML350e Gen8 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant ML350e Gen8, new and refurbished. This tower ships with two Gigabit ports, not four — a single embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i Adapter — so an add-in card here is a more common purchase than on the rack servers of the same generation.

ML350e Gen8 Networking Specifications

  • Embedded networking: one HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i Adapter on an Intel I350 controller, over a fixed PCIe 2.0 x2 link, giving two RJ-45 ports
  • Management port: a separate 1Gb dedicated HPE iLO 4 management NIC — three RJ-45 connectors on the chassis in total
  • Expansion slots: six in total, four PCIe 3.0 and two PCIe 2.0
  • Slot widths: slot 2 is PCIe 3.0 x16 and slot 3 PCIe 3.0 x16, slot 4 is PCIe 3.0 x8, slot 1 is PCIe 3.0 x4, and slots 5 and 6 are PCIe 2.0 at x4 and x1
  • Processor dependency: slots 1, 2, 5 and 6 activate with processor 1; slots 3 and 4 activate only when processor 2 is installed
  • Cards listed for this server: NC112T single-port, 332T and 361T dual-port and 331T and NC365T four-port Gigabit copper; NC523SFP, NC552SFP, 530SFP and 560SFP+ at 10 Gigabit on SFP+, with 530T and 561T at 10 Gigabit on RJ-45

Two embedded Gigabit ports, and four usable slots until the second CPU goes in. The tower ships one HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i Adapter, plus a separate iLO 4 management port. Of the six PCIe slots, slots 3 and 4 activate only with processor 2 installed — and those are the PCIe 3.0 x16 and x8 slots a 10 Gigabit card wants.

How many ports do you actually need to add?

What you needCard to look at
Two more Gigabit copper ports332T or 361T, or the single-port NC112T for one
Four more Gigabit copper ports331T or NC365T
10 Gigabit over SFP+NC523SFP, NC552SFP, 530SFP or 560SFP+
10 Gigabit over RJ-45 copper530T or 561T

Slot count is rarely the constraint on this tower; processor count is. A single-processor ML350e Gen8 has four usable slots out of six, and the two it loses are the PCIe 3.0 x16 and x8 slots wired to processor 2 — exactly the slots a 10 Gigabit adapter wants. Fitting the second CPU is what opens them, the same way it opens the second bank of six DIMM slots.

Choosing the Right ML350e Gen8 Network Adapter

  • Count the processors before the slots. With one CPU fitted, slots 3 and 4 are inactive no matter what is plugged into them.
  • Give a 10 Gigabit card a wide PCIe 3.0 slot. Slots 2, 3 and 4 are the x16 and x8 electrical widths; slot 6 is a PCIe 2.0 x1 in an x4 connector and half length.
  • SFP+ cards ship bare. Direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones, are bought separately — the 530T and 561T take ordinary RJ-45 copper instead.
  • Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card will not connect to a 10GBASE-T switch port without the right optics in between.
  • Two embedded ports is the starting point. A four-port card takes the tower to six Gigabit ports; a dual-port card takes it to four.

The second processor is what activates the two fastest expansion slots — see ML350e Gen8 processors, and storage controllers for the other main claimant on those slots. ML350e Gen8 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network ports does an ML350e Gen8 have as standard?
Two. A single embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i Adapter provides two RJ-45 ports, and a third RJ-45 connector serves the dedicated iLO 4 management port.

Does the ML350e Gen8 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in card. The NC523SFP, NC552SFP, 530SFP and 560SFP+ adapters cover SFP+, and the 530T and 561T provide 10 Gigabit over ordinary RJ-45 copper.

How many PCIe slots does the ML350e Gen8 have?
Six: four PCIe 3.0 and two PCIe 2.0. Slots 1, 2, 5 and 6 work with one processor installed, while slots 3 and 4 activate only when the second processor is fitted.

Which slot should a 10 Gigabit adapter go in?
One of the wide PCIe 3.0 slots. Slot 2 and slot 3 are x16 and slot 4 is x8, while slot 6 is only a PCIe 2.0 x1 and half length.

Are cables or transceivers included with SFP+ adapters?
No. Direct attach copper cables for short runs, and transceivers plus fibre for longer ones, are bought separately from the card.

What controller does the embedded adapter use?
An Intel I350, connected over a fixed PCIe 2.0 x2 link. It supports 10Base-T, 100Base-TX and 1000Base-T over Category 5E or better cabling to 100 metres.
