Which Unbuffered kit gets you to the capacity you need?

With only four slots there is no clever route to capacity: the 8GB dual-rank kit is the only one that reaches 32GB, and anything smaller sets a ceiling you will meet again. Buying four matched 8GB modules at the outset costs more than filling the three empty slots on a 2GB machine, but it is the difference between 32GB and 8GB on a server that cannot be extended past four DIMMs.

Choosing the Right ML310e Gen8 Memory

• Unbuffered ECC is the only type that runs. Registered and Load Reduced modules from a rack ProLiant are not an alternative here, and neither is desktop non-ECC memory.
• The processor sets the speed ceiling, not the module. Xeon E3-1200 v2 parts and the Core i3-3220 and i3-3240 support 1600, 1333 and 1066MHz; the Pentium G2120 tops out at 1333MHz; and HPE notes that Celeron G1610 and G1620 and Pentium G2020 clock 1600MHz memory down to 1333MHz.
• Low voltage has a documented cost at two DIMMs per channel. HPE SmartMemory runs 2 DIMMs per channel at 1333MHz at 1.35V, and warns that third-party memory may only manage 1066MHz at 1.5V.
• Do not recycle DIMMs from an earlier ProLiant. HPE states that memory from previous-generation servers is not fully compatible with the ML310e Gen8.
• Every kit here is one DIMM. A four-slot fill is four kits, not one boxed set.
