HPE ProLiant ML310e Gen8 Power Supplies

Genuine HPE power supplies for the HPE ProLiant ML310e Gen8, new and refurbished. Read this before ordering: HPE requires the 4U Redundant Power Supply Enablement Kit to be installed when Common Slot supplies are used, so on a tower that left the factory with the 350W Multi-Output unit, the 460W supply alone is not a complete upgrade.

ML310e Gen8 Power Supply Specifications

  • Supplies documented: a 350W Multi-Output unit at 85% efficiency, and the 460W Common Slot Gold at up to 92%
  • What shipped: the pre-configured Entry models carry the 350W Multi-Output supply, which HPE describes as non-redundant and not hot-plug, and lists only as a factory-integrated kit
  • Common Slot supplies: hot-plug and UL and CE Mark compliant, in the shared form factor used across a wide range of ProLiant and Integrity servers
  • Enablement kit: the HPE 4U Redundant Power Supply Enablement Kit must be installed when using HPE Common Slot power supplies, with optional 1+1 redundancy through power supply option kits
  • Mixing: not supported; every supply inside one server must be exactly the same model, and Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus certifications cannot be mixed
  • Input and heat per supply: 100 to 240 VAC at 50 to 60Hz, drawing 7.1 Amps at 120 VAC down to 3.5 Amps at 240 VAC, with 486W rated input power and 1773 BTU per hour at 120 VAC

The enablement kit is not an accessory. HPE requires the 4U Redundant Power Supply Enablement Kit to be installed when Common Slot power supplies are used in this chassis, so a 460W Common Slot unit on its own will not complete an upgrade from the 350W Multi-Output supply. 1+1 redundancy is the kit plus two identical supplies.

Do you need the enablement kit as well as the supply?

Where you are startingWhat the change needs
Replacing a Common Slot supply like for likeOne 460W Common Slot Gold unit, same model as the other
Moving from the 350W Multi-Output supply to Common SlotThe 4U Redundant Power Supply Enablement Kit, then the Common Slot supply
Adding 1+1 redundancyThe enablement kit and two identical 460W Common Slot Gold supplies
Keeping a 350W Entry model as builtNothing here; that supply is a factory-integrated part

Redundancy on this tower is a two-part purchase and a step change, not a spare-part order. A 350W machine runs a supply that cannot be hot-swapped; the Common Slot route adds efficiency, hot-plug service and the option of a second unit, but it starts with the enablement kit every time.

Choosing the Right ML310e Gen8 Power Supply

  • Identify the installed supply first. A 350W Multi-Output unit and a 460W Common Slot unit are different mechanical propositions, not two wattages of the same thing.
  • Matching is a requirement, not a preference. HPE states that all supplies in one server must be exactly the same model, and that Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus cannot be mixed.
  • A single supply in a redundant-capable chassis is still a single supply. 1+1 means two identical units, bought as a pair or completed later.
  • Size against the configuration, not the maximum. HPE publishes a Power Advisor for this, and a four-bay tower with one processor sits well under the 460W ceiling.
  • Cords differ by installation. The tower ships with a country-specific NEMA cord for a wall outlet, while AC option kits include one PDU IEC cable for rack use.

ML310e Gen8 Power Supplies FAQ

Does the ML310e Gen8 have a redundant power supply?
Not as standard. The pre-configured Entry models ship a single 350W Multi-Output supply that HPE describes as non-redundant and not hot-plug. Optional 1+1 redundancy comes from Common Slot power supply option kits.

What is the 4U Redundant Power Supply Enablement Kit for?
HPE requires it to be installed when HPE Common Slot power supplies are used in this chassis. A Common Slot supply is not a drop-in replacement for the 350W unit without it.

Can I mix power supplies in an ML310e Gen8?
No. HPE states that every power supply inside one server must be exactly the same model, and that mixing Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus certified supplies is not supported.

How efficient is the 460W Common Slot supply?
Up to 92%, against 85% for the 350W Multi-Output supply that shipped on the Entry models.

What input power does an ML310e Gen8 draw?
Each supply is rated for 100 to 240 VAC at 50 to 60Hz, drawing 7.1 Amps at 120 VAC down to 3.5 Amps at 240 VAC, with a rated input power of 486W.

How many fans does an ML310e Gen8 have?
Two, and neither is redundant: one system fan and one PCIe fan ship as standard. HPE notes that system performance may be reduced when running with a fan fault.
