HPE ProLiant SL165s G7 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR3 memory for the HPE ProLiant SL165s G7, new and refurbished. Each tray carries 24 DIMM slots — twelve per processor, four channels of three — and the decision that shapes every upgrade is Registered against Unbuffered, because HPE does not allow the two to be mixed in one server.
SL165s G7 Memory Specifications
- Type: DDR3 Registered (RDIMM) or Unbuffered with ECC (UDIMM), PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) and PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066), including PC3L low power parts
- Slots: 24 in total — four channels per processor with three DIMM slots on each; with one processor fitted, only half the slots are available, and a DIMM must never go in a slot whose processor is not installed
- Maximum registered: 256GB, reached with one 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 module in the centre socket of each channel and 8GB modules in the rest, running at 800MHz with all 24 slots filled
- Maximum unbuffered: 64GB, using sixteen 4GB Unbuffered modules at two per channel, with the middle slot of each channel left empty
- Rank limit: up to eight ranks per memory channel, and one quad-rank DIMM per channel, which has to sit in the centre socket
- Protection: Advanced ECC multi-bit error protection
- Kit contents: every HPE DDR3 option kit for this server is a single DIMM
Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed, and the gap between them is wide. Registered DIMMs reach 256GB across all 24 slots; Unbuffered stop at 64GB and can only fill 16, because the middle slot of every channel has to stay empty. Converting a tray from one type to the other means replacing every module in it, so check what is fitted before ordering a single kit.
Should you fit Registered or Unbuffered DIMMs?
| Registered (RDIMM) | Unbuffered (UDIMM) | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | 256GB | 64GB |
| Slots that can be filled | 24 | 16 |
| Kit sizes stocked | 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB | 2GB, 4GB |
| Largest module | 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 | 4GB dual-rank PC3-10600 |
| Mixing with the other type | Not supported | Not supported |
Registered is the answer for any SL165s G7 bought for capacity: Unbuffered stops at a quarter of the registered ceiling and can only use two thirds of the slots, because the middle slot of every channel has to stay empty. Unbuffered kits are worth buying only where a tray already runs them and is being topped up, since converting a server from one type to the other means replacing every module in it.
Choosing the Right SL165s G7 Memory
- Check which type is fitted before ordering. Registered and Unbuffered cannot be mixed, so one wrong module is not a slower server, it is a server that will not run.
- A 16GB quad-rank module has one home per channel. HPE allows one quad-rank DIMM per channel and it must go in the centre socket, which is why the 256GB maximum pairs eight 16GB modules with sixteen 8GB ones rather than filling all 24 slots with 16GB.
- Mixed speeds drop the whole server, not one channel. Mixing DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1066 modules is allowed, but the memory bus falls to the slowest module fitted — even when that module sits on the other processor.
- Expect 800MHz at three DIMMs per channel. Filling the third slot in a channel brings the bank down to 800MHz, so a 24-slot build trades clock for capacity.
- Balance capacity across both processors. HPE asks for the total split evenly between installed processors, and for channels loaded similarly where the capacity allows.
- Every option kit is one DIMM. A 96GB upgrade is twelve 8GB kits, not a boxed set.

SL165s G7 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in an SL165s G7?
256GB with Registered DIMMs. HPE reaches it with eight 16GB quad-rank PC3-8500 modules and sixteen 8GB PC3-10600 modules across all 24 slots, running at 800MHz at that population.
How many memory slots does the SL165s G7 have?
Twenty-four, arranged as four channels per processor with three DIMM slots on each channel. With one processor installed, only twelve are usable.
Can I mix Registered and Unbuffered memory in an SL165s G7?
No. HPE does not allow UDIMMs and RDIMMs in the same server. Whichever type is fitted today is what an upgrade has to match, and switching types means replacing every module.
Why does my SL165s G7 memory run slower than the module rating?
Two reasons. Filling the third DIMM slot in a channel brings the bank to 800MHz, and mixing module speeds drops the whole memory bus to the slowest DIMM in the server, even if that DIMM is on the other processor.
Where does the 16GB quad-rank DIMM go?
In the centre socket of a channel, and only one quad-rank module per channel is allowed. The eight-ranks-per-channel limit is what caps it.
Do HPE memory kits for this server contain more than one DIMM?
No. Every DDR3 option kit listed for the SL165s G7 is a single DIMM, so filling 24 slots means 24 kits.
