DL385 Gen10 at a glance

Processors

One or two AMD EPYC 7xx2 processors of the same model. The 7402, 7502, 7552 and 7702 kits, rated up to 200W, ship with the High Performance heat sink and need the High Performance fan kit (867810-B21); the 7262, 7302, 7352 and 7452 kits ship with the standard heat sink.

HPE limits processors to 125W or lower with the 4LFF mid-plane cage. It also lists the 1U High Performance Heat Sink Kit (P19368-B21) as required for processors above 126W and when that cage is selected. DL385 Gen10 Processors

Memory

32 DIMM slots, 16 per processor on 8 channels. DDR4-2933 kits, which HPE supports only with 7xx2 processors; the list also keeps DDR4-2666 kits from earlier editions. Up to 4TB with two processors and 128GB LRDIMMs in all 32 slots, or 2TB with 64GB RDIMMs; 2TB per processor.

RDIMMs and LRDIMMs do not mix, nor do x4 and x8 kits; with two DIMMs per channel the 2933 kits run at 2666 MT/s. The DIMM blank kit (P07818-B21) is required for processors above 126W and when the 4LFF mid-plane cage is selected. DL385 Gen10 Memory

Drives

Up to 30 SFF drives (24 front, 6 rear) in the 24SFF model, or 19 LFF plus 2 SFF in the 12LFF model (12 front, 4 mid-plane, 3 LFF and 2 SFF rear); the 4LFF mid-plane cage limits processors to 125W or lower and cards to single-wide ones of 8.5 inches or less.

Up to 24 NVMe drives in the front boxes of the 8SFF model, with NVMe Express Bay kits and NVMe risers; 24 needs the second processor and leaves I/O cards to the ALOM slot.

NVMe, rear drives and the mid-plane cage need the High Performance fan kit. Two SATA M.2 SSDs on the system board.

The 8SFF model upgrades to 16 or 24 SFF; a field upgrade to 24 SFF needs the High Performance fan kit, and HPE lists the 12Gb SAS Expander Card Kit (870549-B21) for it. The 8LFF model cannot be upgraded to 12LFF in the field. DL385 Gen10 Drives

Storage controllers

Expansion

Up to 8 PCIe 3.0 slots: 3 on the primary riser, 3 on the secondary and 2 on the tertiary riser, which need processor 2. The 3LFF rear cage uses the secondary and tertiary riser space. Before you order memory, check that the server is a DL385 Gen10 and not a Gen10 Plus or Gen10 Plus v2. HPE lists the EPYC 7302 and 7402 for all three, so those processors do not tell them apart. Look at the rear: the DL385 Gen10 has a FlexibleLOM slot; the Gen10 Plus and the Gen10 Plus v2 have an OCP 3.0 slot and no embedded network ports. The Gen10 takes DDR4-2933 kits such as P19043-B21; the other two take DDR4-3200 kits such as P07646-B21. The processor kits differ too: the EPYC 7302 kit is P16643-B21 for the Gen10 and P17540-B21 for the Gen10 Plus. Check the processor model in iLO under System Information › Processors: a 7xx3 model means a Gen10 Plus v2.

DL385p Gen8, Gen10 or Gen10 Plus? How to tell

Of these three, AMD Opteron processors mean a DL385p Gen8. The DL385 Gen10 and Gen10 Plus run the same EPYC 7xx2 processors, so look at the rear: a FlexibleLOM slot means a Gen10, and an OCP 3.0 slot a Gen10 Plus or a Gen10 Plus v2. The memory HPE lists for each differs too.

DL385 Gen10 parts questions

How much memory does the DL385 Gen10 support?

Up to 4TB with two processors: 128GB DDR4 LRDIMMs in all 32 slots, 2TB per processor. With 64GB registered DIMMs the maximum is 2TB. A single processor can use only its 16 slots. HPE supports the DDR4-2933 kits only with EPYC 7xx2 processors. RDIMMs and LRDIMMs do not mix, nor do x4 and x8 kits, and with two DIMMs per channel the 2933 kits run at 2666 MT/s.

Which drives fit the DL385 Gen10?

SFF SC drives in SAS, SATA or NVMe, LFF SAS or SATA drives (LFF SC, or LFF SCC for SSDs and 15K hard drives), SATA M.2 SSDs on the system board, and NVMe add-in-card SSDs. NVMe needs NVMe bays in front; SAS and SATA run on a Smart Array controller.

How do I tell which processors my DL385 Gen10 has?

Read the processor model in iLO under System Information › Processors. HPE's QuickSpecs list EPYC 7xx2 processors for the DL385 Gen10, whose model numbers have 2 as the last digit, such as the 7302, 7402 or 7702, and HPE supports the DDR4-2933 kits only with them. Two processors must be the same model. The 7402, 7502, 7552 and 7702 kits ship with the High Performance heat sink and need the High Performance fan kit.

Is my server a DL385 Gen10, a Gen10 Plus or a Gen10 Plus v2?

The Gen10 and the Gen10 Plus both run AMD EPYC 7xx2 processors, such as the 7302 or 7402, so the processor does not tell them apart. The Gen10 has a FlexibleLOM slot and PCIe 3.0 slots and takes DDR4-2933 memory; the Gen10 Plus has an OCP 3.0 slot, no embedded network ports and PCIe 4.0 slots, and takes DDR4-3200 memory. The Gen10 Plus v2 has the same OCP 3.0 slot and the same DDR4-3200 kits as the Gen10 Plus, and HPE lists the 7302 and 7402 for it too; a 7xx3 processor, such as the 7313, means a v2. A DL385p Gen8 runs AMD Opteron processors with DDR3 memory. The Gen10's processor and memory kits are its own, so buy those from the page for your generation.
