DL380p Gen8 at a glance

Processors

One or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors of the same model, so the two versions do not mix; HPE lists an upgrade from E5-2600 to E5-2600 v2.

The 12LFF model takes only processors of 115W or less, and the 25SFF model none of 130W or more. HPE includes 2 more fans with the second processor. DL380p Gen8 Processors

Memory

24 DIMM slots, 12 per processor on 4 channels. HPE lists DDR3-1866 and DDR3-1600 kits for v2 processors and DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1333 kits for E5-2600; only the Performance v2 models run memory at 1866MHz.

Up to 768GB with 32GB LRDIMMs, 384GB with 16GB RDIMMs, 128GB with 8GB UDIMMs (16 at most). RDIMMs, LRDIMMs and UDIMMs do not mix. LRDIMMs do not fit the 25SFF model with processors above 95W, or the 12LFF model with processors of 115W or more. DL380p Gen8 Memory

Drives

8 SFF (16 with the second 8SFF cage), 25 SFF, 8 LFF or 12 LFF drive bays; the 8LFF, 12LFF and 25SFF cages are not field upgrades from the 8SFF model. The second 8SFF cage (662883-B21) needs its own storage controller and removes the optical drive. 12G SAS hard drives run at 6G in this server. DL380p Gen8 Drives

Storage controllers

Embedded Smart Array P420i on every model; in the 12LFF and 25SFF models a built-in expander lets it run all the drives. The 12LFF and 25SFF CTO models ship with a Zero Memory P420i and need at least a 512MB cache module, such as the 512MB FBWC (661069-B21).

Smart Array P222, P420, P421, P430, P431, P822 and P830 controllers and H220, H221 and H222 HBAs; a P430 cannot go in slot 3 or 4. DL380p Gen8 Storage Controllers

Networking

One FlexibleLOM slot, with 4 x 1Gb or 2 x 10Gb ports depending on the model, plus PCIe adapters; a dedicated 1Gb iLO port. Each 10Gb adapter needs 2GB of server memory. DL380p Gen8 Networking Adapters

Expansion

Up to 6 PCIe slots: 3 on the primary riser (slot 3 is PCIe 2.0), and 3 on the optional 3-slot riser or 2 x16 on the optional 2-slot riser. Either optional riser needs processor 2.

Cards over 9.5 inches need a double-wide cage kit: 752803-B21 in the primary position or 728543-B21 in the secondary. The secondary cage needs two 1200W power supplies and both processors, and two double-wide cards need both cages and the 1200W supplies. Neither cage fits the 8LFF, 12LFF or 25SFF models.

The Quadro K6000, GRID K1 and K2, Tesla K40C and Xeon Phi 5110P are supported only with E5-2600 v2 processors. Riser cards

Before you order memory, check the processor version and the DIMM type already fitted. The model number ends in its version: E5-2670 and E5-2650 are E5-2600 processors, for which HPE lists DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1333 kits; E5-2650 v2 and E5-2690 v2 are v2, with DDR3-1866 and DDR3-1600 kits. Registered, unbuffered and load-reduced DIMMs do not mix in one server: the letter after the speed in the kit name tells them apart (PC3L-12800R registered, PC3-12800E unbuffered, PC3-14900L load-reduced), and unbuffered DIMMs fill 16 slots at most. The processor model number tells the three apart: E5-2400 in the DL380e Gen8, E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 in the DL380p Gen8, E5-2600 v3 or v4 in the DL380 Gen9. The two Gen8 models share many DDR3 kits; the Gen9 takes DDR4.

DL380p Gen8 parts questions

How much memory does the DL380p Gen8 support?

Up to 768GB with two processors and 32GB DDR3 LRDIMMs in all 24 slots. With registered DIMMs the maximum is 384GB (16GB in every slot), and with unbuffered DIMMs 128GB (8GB in 16 slots, the most UDIMMs HPE allows). A single processor can use only its 12 slots. LRDIMMs do not fit the 25SFF model with processors above 95W, or the 12LFF model with processors of 115W or more. RDIMMs, LRDIMMs and UDIMMs cannot be mixed.

Which drives fit the DL380p Gen8?

2.5-inch SFF and 3.5-inch LFF hot-plug drives on HPE's SmartDrive (SC) carrier, in SAS or SATA, as hard drives or SSDs. Some LFF drives come in HPE's SC Converter (SCC) form, among them the 15K 12G SAS hard drives and most LFF SSDs. The chassis decides how many: 8 SFF (16 with the second 8SFF cage), 25 SFF, 8 LFF or 12 LFF, and the 8LFF, 12LFF and 25SFF cages are not field upgrades from the 8SFF model. 12G SAS hard drives run at 6G in this server.

How do I tell whether my DL380p Gen8 has E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors?

Read the processor model in iLO under System Information › Processors. A model number ending in v2, such as E5-2650 v2, is v2; one with no suffix, such as E5-2670 or E5-2650, is E5-2600. HPE lists DDR3-1866 and DDR3-1600 kits for v2 processors and DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1333 kits for E5-2600 processors. Two processors must be the same model, so the two versions do not mix.

Is my server a DL380p Gen8, a DL380e Gen8 or a DL380 Gen9?

Check the processor model number. The DL380p Gen8 runs Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors (such as E5-2670 or E5-2650 v2) and has 24 DIMM slots for DDR3. The DL380e Gen8 runs E5-2400 or E5-2400 v2 processors (such as E5-2420 or E5-2440 v2) and has 12 DIMM slots; every DDR3 kit on its list is on the DL380p Gen8 list too. The DL380 Gen9 runs E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors (such as E5-2650 v4) with DDR4 memory. Processors differ between all three, so buy them from the page for your server.
