What is the difference between the HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8 and the DL380p Gen8?
The e is the entry line. The DL380e Gen8 is a 2U two-socket server on Intel Xeon E5-2400 and E5-2400 v2 processors with 12 DDR3 DIMM slots; the DL380p Gen8 runs the Xeon E5-2600 family. Processor, riser and cage kits here carry DL380e part numbers and are not interchangeable.

How many drives does the HPE ProLiant DL380e Gen8 hold?
It depends on the cage. HPE lists 8 SFF with an optical bay and an optional +8 SFF upgrade to 16 SFF, 8 LFF with an optical bay, and 12 LFF or 25 SFF without one, plus an optional two-bay rear kit.

How much memory does the DL380e Gen8 support?
The QuickSpecs give 384GB, quoted as 12 x 32GB LRDIMMs at 1333MHz. The RDIMM maximum is 192GB and the UDIMM maximum 96GB. With one processor installed, only half the DIMM slots are available.

What storage controller does the DL380e Gen8 ship with?
The embedded HPE Dynamic Smart Array B120i, for up to 6 SATA drives at up to 3Gb/s. SAS support comes from the B320i/512MB FBWC controller on the SAS riser board or from a Smart Array P-series card, and the B120i is automatically disabled when that riser is installed.

Does the DL380e Gen8 come with rails?
Not necessarily. HPE states rail kits are optional for the DL380e Gen8 and no longer included standard. Entry pre-configured models shipped with a non-telescoping friction rail kit; the ball bearing kits with cable management arm are 663478-B21 for SFF and 663480-B21 for LFF.
