3.5-inch SATA 6G hard drives on the Low Profile (LP) carrier, the 3.5-inch carrier of most Gen10 ProLiant servers and of every Gen10 Plus, Gen11 and Gen12 server: 7.2K rpm Business Critical (Midline) drives, including 512e and helium models. These are the 3.5-inch SATA drives in HPE's HDD QuickSpecs, version 40, Business Critical drives of “Up to 26 TB”. A SATA drive runs on the embedded SATA controller as well as on a Smart Array or tri-mode controller. The Gen8 and Gen9 servers, the DL380 Gen10 and the DL385 Gen10 take Smart Carrier (SC) drives instead.

Low Profile or Smart Carrier?

The carrier has to match the bay. Most Gen10 ProLiant servers and every Gen10 Plus, Gen11 and Gen12 server take 3.5-inch drives on the Low Profile (LP) carrier; the Gen8 and Gen9 servers, the DL380 Gen10 and the DL385 Gen10 take the Smart Carrier (SC). The carrier is in the drive's name.

Does a SATA hard drive need a Smart Array controller?

No. The embedded SATA controller runs SATA drives; a Smart Array or tri-mode controller runs them too, with hardware RAID.
