Before you order memory or processors, check whether the processors are v3 or v4. The model number ends in the version: E5-2650 v3 and E5-2690 v3 are v3 and take DDR4-2133 kits; E5-2650 v4 and E5-2690 v4 are v4 and take DDR4-2400 kits, which HPE lists for v4 processors only. DL380 Gen9 parts questions

How much memory does the DL380 Gen9 support?

Up to 3TB with two E5-2600 v4 processors and 128GB DDR4-2400 LRDIMMs in all 24 slots. With registered DIMMs the maximum is 768GB (32GB in every slot); with v3 processors and 64GB LRDIMMs it is 1.5TB. A single processor can use only its 12 slots.

Which drives fit the DL380 Gen9?

SFF SC drives in SAS, SATA or NVMe; LFF SC and LFF SCC drives in SAS or SATA in the 4LFF and 12LFF models; NVMe HHHL cards; and SATA M.2 SSDs on the Universal SATA HHHL M.2 Kit. Which interfaces work depends on the controller.

How do I tell whether my DL380 Gen9 has v3 or v4 processors?

Read the processor model in iLO under System Information › Processors. The model number ends in its version: E5-2650 v3 is v3, E5-2650 v4 is v4. It decides the memory kit: DDR4-2133 for v3, DDR4-2400 for v4, and HPE lists the DDR4-2400 kits for v4 processors only. Two processors must be the same model, so v3 and v4 do not mix.

Is my server a DL380 Gen9 or a DL380p Gen8?

Check the processor model number. The Gen9 runs Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors (such as E5-2650 v4) with DDR4 memory; the DL380p Gen8 runs E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 processors (such as E5-2650 v2) with DDR3 memory. Both have 24 DIMM slots. Memory kits and processors differ between them, so buy those from the page for your generation.
