2.5-inch SAS hard drives on the Smart Carrier (SC), the carrier of most Gen8, Gen9 and Gen10 ProLiant servers (and of the DL325 Gen10 Plus and DL385 Gen10 Plus): 15K, 10K and 7.2K rpm Enterprise and Midline drives, SAS 12G and 6G. In HPE's words, “HPE Hard Drives with smart carriers are designed to provide an interface to communicate critical status and management information.” The 2.5-inch bays of most Gen10 Plus servers and of the Gen11 and Gen12 servers take Basic Carrier (BC) drives instead.

Smart Carrier or Basic Carrier?

The carrier has to match the bay. Most Gen8 to Gen10 ProLiant servers take Smart Carrier (SC) drives; most Gen10 Plus servers and the Gen11 and Gen12 servers take Basic Carrier (BC) drives. The carrier is in the drive's name, and your server's drives page lists the drives HPE lists for it.

15K, 10K or 7.2K rpm?

HPE sorts its hard drives by workload: “HPE HDDs are available for three types of workloads: Enterprise high-performance (Mission Critical), Midline high capacity (Business Critical), and Entry-level storage solutions.” 15K and 10K rpm drives are the Mission Critical (Enterprise) class, for “Mission-critical, high I/O” work; 7.2K rpm drives are the Business Critical (Midline) class, for “Business Critical, High capacity” storage such as “Backup, archive, reference”.
