HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 Drives
Genuine HPE hot-plug drives for the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. The 1U chassis ships in three bay layouts — 8 SFF, 10 SFF or 4 LFF — no hard drives ship standard, and the backplane in front of you decides what will seat.
DL360 Gen9 Drive Specifications
- Bays: 8 SFF hot-plug, 10 SFF (an 8SFF chassis plus the 2SFF kit 764630-B21) or 4 LFF — the 2SFF kit is not supported on the 4LFF chassis
- Carriers: Gen9 SmartDrive SC carriers in SFF and LFF, with SCC converter and SCN NVMe variants; blanks are 666987-B21 and 666986-B21
- Interfaces: 12G SAS and 6G SATA hard drives and SSDs, HPE Value SAS SSDs, and NVMe PCIe SSDs in SCN carriers or half-height cards
- Documented internal maximums: 153.0TB on 10 × 15.3TB SAS SSDs, 20.0TB on 10 × 2TB SFF drives, 48.0TB on 4 × 12TB LFF drives
- NVMe: 6 NVMe plus 4 SAS/SATA through express bay kit 817676-B21, or 2 NVMe through 764628-B21 — HPE requires the High Performance Fan Kit 766201-B21 with either
The embedded controller is SATA only. HPE lists the Dynamic Smart Array B140i's storage protocol support as SATA, with RAID 0, 1, 10 and 5. SAS drives need an H240ar Smart HBA, a Smart Array P440ar or a plug-in card, plus the SAS cable kit for your chassis — the 2SFF bay kit ships with a B140i SATA cable, not a SAS one.
What drives fit the DL360 Gen9?
| Drive family | Interface | Form factor | Capacities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enterprise hard drives | 12G SAS, 10K and 15K | SFF SC, LFF SCC | 300GB to 2.4TB |
| Midline hard drives | 12G SAS, 6G SATA, 512e/helium | SFF SC, LFF SC | 1TB to 14TB |
| Solid state drives | 12G SAS WI, MU, RI, Value SAS | SFF SC, LFF SCC | 400GB to 15.3TB |
| Solid state drives | 6G SATA, MU / RI | SFF SC, LFF SCC | 240GB to 3.84TB |
| NVMe PCIe SSDs | x4 lanes, x8 card | SFF SCN carrier, HHHL card | 375GB to 7.68TB |
Buy to the controller as well as the bay. The embedded Dynamic Smart Array B140i is SATA only, so SAS drives need an H240ar, a P440ar or a plug-in Smart Array card. Our SAS versus SATA guide, the 512e explainer and the SmartDrive carrier history cover the rest.
Choosing the Right DL360 Gen9 Drives
- Start from the chassis. An 8SFF server reaches 10 bays only through the 2SFF kit; a 4LFF server takes neither that kit nor SFF drives.
- Match endurance to write load. Write Intensive for heavy write duty, Mixed Use for virtualization and databases, Read Intensive and Value SAS for read-heavy serving — see the WI, MU and RI comparison.
- NVMe is a kit, not just a drive. The enablement kit consumes a PCIe slot, brings the High Performance Fan Kit with it, and replaces Universal Media Bay support.
- Keep each array uniform. Mixing interfaces, spindle speeds or endurance classes leaves it running to its weakest member.
- Order blanks with a partial fill. Pre-configured models arrive with some blanks installed; more are separate part numbers.

DL360 Gen9 Drives FAQ
How many drives does the HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen9 hold?
Eight SFF, ten SFF or four LFF, depending on the chassis. The 10SFF configuration is an 8SFF server plus the 2SFF SAS/SATA Universal Media Bay kit, 764630-B21, which HPE states is not supported on the 4LFF model. No hard drives ship standard.
What is the maximum internal storage of the DL360 Gen9?
HPE quotes 153.0TB from 10 x 15.3TB SAS SSDs, 76.8TB from 10 x 7.68TB SATA SSDs, 20.0TB from 10 x 2TB SFF hard drives, 48.0TB from 4 x 12TB LFF hard drives, and 61.44TB from 6 x 7.68TB NVMe plus 4 x 3.84TB SFF SSDs.
Can the DL360 Gen9 use NVMe drives?
Yes, through an express bay enablement kit. The 6 NVMe plus 4 SAS/SATA kit is 817676-B21 and the 2 NVMe kit is 764628-B21. HPE states the enablement card sits in slot 1 of the primary riser, the High Performance Fan Kit 766201-B21 is required, and NVMe replaces Universal Media Bay support.
What carrier do DL360 Gen9 drives use?
The Gen9 SmartDrive (SC) carrier - SFF 2.5-inch and LFF 3.5-inch hot-plug versions, with SCC converter carriers for LFF-mounted small drives and SCN carriers for NVMe. A bare drive without the matching carrier will not seat in this backplane.
Do I need a SAS controller for DL360 Gen9 drives?
For SAS drives, yes. The embedded Dynamic Smart Array B140i supports SATA only. HPE notes the 2SFF kit includes a cable for the B140i, and that for SAS an alternate storage controller and its associated cable kit are required.
Do DL360 Gen9 drives come with a warranty?
HPE states that hard drives carry either a one year or three year warranty depending on the drive, and points to the specific hard drive QuickSpecs for details. Midline 7.2K parts are generally the one-year models; enterprise and SSD parts are generally three-year.
