HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12 Processors

HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12 Processors

Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12, new and refurbished. The server has one socket for an Intel Xeon 6 processor, and HPE lists five families for it — two Efficient-Core and three Performance-Core — so the choice is not how many processors but which kind: 144 small cores for density, 86 big cores for throughput, or a single-socket RICH I/O part whose 136 PCIe lanes are what makes the four-GPU chassis possible.

DL340 Gen12 Processor Specifications

  • Socket: one, Intel Xeon 6, with the standard or performance heat sink sold as a separate kit
  • E-Core Performance per Watt: 6710E 64-core 205W, 6731E and 6740E 96-core 250W, 6746E 112-core 250W, 6756E 128-core 225W and 6766E 144-core 250W
  • E-Core Performance: 6780E 144-core 330W
  • P-Core: 6507P 8-core 150W through 6787P 86-core 350W, including the 3.7GHz 6725P, the 3.8GHz 6732P and the 6774P AI host processor
  • Mainline: 6505P 12-core 150W through 6760P 64-core 330W
  • Single Socket (RICH I/O): 6511P 16-core 150W through 6781P 80-core 350W, the 6XX1P parts with 136 PCIe lanes
  • Memory: DDR5 at 6400 MT/s with one DIMM per channel and 5200 MT/s with two; HPE lists the 6710E, 6731E and 6746E at 5600 MT/s, and all listed processors support up to 4TB
  • Heat sinks: HPE ProLiant Compute DL340 Gen12 Standard Heat Sink Kit (P71475-B21) and Gen12 Performance Heat Sink Kit (P73668-B21); which one you need depends on TDP and chassis
  • Cooling: six fans, standard or performance kit; the performance kit is required for the GPU chassis and NEBS configurations

The heat sink is not in the box, and the chassis decides which one you need. HPE allows the standard heat sink only for a processor of 250W or less in an SFF chassis with no more than two 8SFF cages or four 4EDSFF cages; anything above 250W, and every LFF, Front GPU and NEBS configuration, requires the high-performance heat sink. Order it with the processor kit, and if the build is the four-GPU chassis, the processor must be a Single Socket 6XX1P part.

Which Xeon 6 family for the DL340 Gen12?

FamilyCores listedTDPNotes
E-Core Performance per Watt64 to 144205W to 250W6710E, 6731E and 6746E at DDR5-5600; the rest at 6400
E-Core Performance144 (6780E)330WPerformance heat sink
P-Core8 to 86150W to 350WHighest clocks: 6725P 3.7GHz, 6732P 3.8GHz
Mainline12 to 64150W to 330WP-Core parts with a 128GB SGX enclave (512GB on the P-Core family)
Single Socket (RICH I/O)16 to 80150W to 350W136 PCIe lanes; required for the Front 4x GPU kit and rear captive risers

The heat sink follows the processor and the chassis together. HPE's table allows the standard heat sink only for processors up to 250W in an SFF chassis with no more than two 8SFF cages or four 4EDSFF cages; a third 8SFF cage, more than four 4EDSFF cages, any processor above 250W, and every LFF, Front GPU and NEBS configuration require the high-performance heat sink. In practice that means most 350W builds and every LFF or GPU build take the performance kit.

Choosing the Right DL340 Gen12 Processor

  • Order the heat sink with the processor. The processor kit does not include one; use the standard kit only for a 250W-or-lower part in a lightly caged SFF chassis, and the performance kit for everything else.
  • GPU builds pick the family for you. The Front 4x GPU Enablement Kit requires a Single Socket 6XX1P processor, and the Front 2x GPU Enablement Kit is not supported with one.
  • Rear captive risers are a 6XX1P feature. HPE offers them, up to two, on the SFF and LFF chassis with the Single Socket processors only.
  • Check the memory clock. Three E-Core parts (6710E, 6731E, 6746E) are listed at DDR5-5600 where every other Xeon 6 in HPE's tables is 6400; two DIMMs per channel drops all of them to 5200.
  • The 6774P is an AI host processor. HPE notes that its usage is consistent with a host CPU for AI servers and that use as general compute will invalidate the warranty.

DL340 Gen12 Processors FAQ

Which processors does the DL340 Gen12 support?
Intel Xeon 6, one per server, in five listed families: E-Core Performance per Watt (6710E to 6766E, 64 to 144 cores), E-Core Performance (6780E, 144 cores), P-Core (6507P to 6787P, 8 to 86 cores), Mainline (6505P to 6760P) and Single Socket RICH I/O (6511P to 6781P). TDPs run from 150W to 350W.

Can I add a second processor to a DL340 Gen12?
No. The DL340 Gen12 is a single-socket server. HPE's configuration guide lists a choice of one processor model and heat sink kit.

Does the processor kit include a heat sink?
No. The heat sink is a separate kit: the DL340 Gen12 Standard Heat Sink Kit (P71475-B21) or the Gen12 Performance Heat Sink Kit (P73668-B21). HPE requires the necessary heat sink for the processor wattage.

Which heat sink do I need?
The standard heat sink is allowed only for processors up to 250W in an SFF chassis with at most two 8SFF cages or four 4EDSFF cages. Processors above 250W, SFF servers with three 8SFF cages or more than four 4EDSFF cages, and all LFF, Front GPU and NEBS configurations need the high-performance heat sink.

What are the 6XX1P single-socket processors?
Intel Xeon 6 parts HPE lists as Single Socket Processors (RICH I/O), from the 6511P 16-core to the 6781P 80-core, with 136 PCIe lanes. They are required for the Front 4x GPU Enablement Kit and the rear captive risers, and are not supported with the Front 2x GPU Enablement Kit.

What is the difference between E-Core and P-Core Xeon 6 processors in the DL340 Gen12?
E-Core parts trade clock speed for core count: 64 to 144 efficient cores at 1.8GHz to 2.4GHz base. P-Core parts run fewer, faster cores, from the 8-core 3.5GHz 6507P to the 86-core 6787P, with the 6725P at 3.7GHz and 6732P at 3.8GHz the fastest listed.

Can I use the Xeon 6 6774P for general workloads?
HPE advises against it. The QuickSpecs state that 6774P usage is consistent with a host CPU for AI servers and that use as general compute will invalidate the warranty.
