Processors

One or two Intel Xeon Scalable processors of the same model and generation: 1st Gen (model numbers x1xx) or 2nd Gen (x2xx), Bronze to Platinum.

Under the EU's ErP Lot 9 rules HPE does not offer the Bronze 3104 and 3204, Silver 4112, Gold 5122 and 5222 or Platinum 8256 as a single processor in factory configurations for the EU.

Processors of 135W or more need all 10 fans in a c7000 enclosure, and mezzanine slot 2 needs processor 2. BL460c Gen10 Processors

Memory

16 DIMM slots, 8 per processor on 6 channels. DDR4-2933 kits for 2nd Gen processors, DDR4-2666 for 1st Gen; HPE does not support 1st Gen memory with 2nd Gen processors.

Up to 2TB with 128GB LRDIMMs in all 16 slots, which needs two 2nd Gen processors: HPE rates each 2nd Gen processor for 1TB and each standard 1st Gen processor for 768GB (1.5TB for M models, which are not in HPE's processor tables for this blade). With RDIMMs, 1TB with 64GB DDR4-2933 kits (2nd Gen) or 512GB with 32GB DDR4-2666 kits (1st Gen).

LRDIMMs and RDIMMs do not mix, 128GB DIMMs do not mix with other capacities, and HPE does not recommend 5 or 7 DIMMs per processor. BL460c Gen10 Memory

Drives

Two SFF hot-plug bays on HPE's SmartDrive carrier, or 4 uFF drives; drives from G7 and earlier servers do not fit.

SFF NVMe SSDs need the NVMe FIO setting (873373-B21), a factory option on configure-to-order blades only, which does not work with the P204i-b. Internal SATA M.2 SSDs need the M.2 FIO Enablement Kit (873870-B21), which HPE offers only as a factory-installed option.

SAS hard drives and SAS SSDs share the blade only as two RAID 0 volumes; no other drive types mix. BL460c Gen10 Drives

Storage controllers

The Smart Array S100i (chipset SATA) comes standard; RAID on it needs the FIO Enable Smart Array S100i SR Setting (784308-B21), which HPE offers only as a factory-installed option. The Smart Array P204i-b modular controller with 1GB cache is the hardware RAID option, and the P408e-m mezzanine controller adds external SAS. BL460c Gen10 Storage Controllers

Networking

One FlexibleLOM adapter is required, 10Gb or 20Gb, with its two ports wired to interconnect bays 1 and 2; HPE says these FlexibleLOMs are not compatible with c-Class blades before Gen9.

Two mezzanine slots add Ethernet, 16Gb Fibre Channel or InfiniBand: slot 1 takes Type A cards (bays 3 and 4), slot 2 Type A or B cards (bays 5 to 8) and needs processor 2. The 544+M InfiniBand adapter needs slot 1 for FDR, the only InfiniBand speed HPE supports on this blade, and in slot 1 only one of its ports is active. BL460c Gen10 Networking Adapters

Enclosure and power

The blade plugs into a c7000 enclosure (up to 16 blades), which HPE requires with 10 fans, or a c3000 (up to 8) with 6 fans. It has no power supply of its own: the enclosure QuickSpecs give the power specifications, and the list has no power supply part.

Expansion

One optional PCI Expansion Blade. HPE says the D2200sb and D2220sb storage blades are not compatible, and Gen9 and older option cards do not work in a PCI Expansion Blade paired with this blade.

HPE iLO 5, linked to the enclosure's Onboard Administrator, with an iLO USB connection on the front.

Specifications from HPE QuickSpecs a00008517enw, version 22 (August 3, 2020). Slot count, kit families and the 2TB maximum match the BL460c Gen10 Memory page.

Before you order memory or processors, check the processor generation. The second digit of a Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze model number tells you: a 1 (Gold 6130, Silver 4110) is 1st Gen and takes DDR4-2666 kits; a 2 (Gold 6230, Silver 4210) is 2nd Gen and takes DDR4-2933 kits. HPE does not support 1st Gen memory with 2nd Gen processors, or two processors of different models or generations. An Intel Xeon E5 model, with no Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze in its name, means the blade is not a Gen10. Find the model in the blade's iLO 5, reached through the enclosure's Onboard Administrator, under System Information › Processors.

How much memory does the BL460c Gen10 support?

Up to 2TB: 128GB DDR4 LRDIMMs in all 16 slots, which needs two 2nd Gen processors. HPE rates each 2nd Gen processor for 1TB and each standard 1st Gen processor for 768GB (1.5TB for M models, which are not in HPE's processor tables for this blade). With registered DIMMs the maximum is 1TB with 64GB DDR4-2933 kits (2nd Gen), or 512GB with 32GB DDR4-2666 kits (1st Gen). A single processor can use only its 8 slots. 2nd Gen processors take DDR4-2933 kits and 1st Gen processors DDR4-2666 kits; LRDIMMs and RDIMMs do not mix, and 128GB DIMMs do not mix with other capacities.

Which drives fit the BL460c Gen10?

SFF drives on HPE's SmartDrive carrier in its two hot-plug bays: SAS and SATA hard drives and SSDs, and NVMe SSDs on a blade built with the NVMe FIO setting. The bays also take a dual M.2 uFF SSD on an SFF carrier, and SATA M.2 SSDs fit inside the blade with the M.2 FIO Enablement Kit (873870-B21), which HPE offers only as a factory-installed option. Drives from G7 and earlier servers do not fit.

How do I tell which processor generation my BL460c Gen10 has?

Read the processor model in the blade's iLO 5, reached through the enclosure's Onboard Administrator, under System Information › Processors. The second digit of a Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze model number is the generation: a 1 (Gold 6130, Silver 4110) means 1st Gen, a 2 (Gold 6230, Silver 4210) means 2nd Gen. It decides the memory kit: DDR4-2666 for 1st Gen, DDR4-2933 for 2nd Gen. Two processors must be the same model and the same generation.

Is my server a BL460c Gen10 or a BL460c Gen9?

Check the processor model number. The Gen10 runs 1st or 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable processors named Platinum, Gold, Silver or Bronze (x1xx or x2xx, such as Gold 6130 or Gold 6230) with DDR4-2666 or DDR4-2933 memory; an Intel Xeon E5 model, with no tier name, means the blade is not a Gen10. HPE's BL460c Gen9 QuickSpecs lists Xeon E5-2600 v3 processors, such as E5-2650 v3, with DDR4-2133 memory. Both have 16 DIMM slots, so the slot count does not tell them apart. Memory kits and processors differ between them, so buy those from the page for your generation.
