How to choose a DL580 Gen10 network adapter

Rule 1

Match the cabling to the switch

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately.

HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber-optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 37)

Rule 2

Count the processors

Slots 12 to 16 need the second processor, slots 1 to 4 need the third processor and slots 8 to 11 need the fourth processor.

HPE: “13 PCIe 3.0 x16 Halflength/ full height Proc 2” (page 9)

Rule 3

Plan the server memory

HPE notes that at least 2 GB of server memory is needed per adapter.

HPE: “A minimum of two Gigabytes (2 GB) of server memory is required per each adapter.” (page 37)

Rule 4

Check the cooling

The InfiniBand HDR100 2-port P06251-B21 and HDR 200Gb P06154-B21 adapters are not supported on configurations with more than 24 SFF bays when the inlet temperature is above 25°C.

HPE: “Notes: Not supported on DL580 Gen10 configurations with more than 24SFF bays when system inlet temperature is higher than 25°C.” (page 37)

DL580 Gen10 adapter questions

How many network adapters can a DL580 Gen10 take?

The DL580 Gen10 takes network adapters in its one FlexibleLOM slot and in up to 16 PCIe 3.0 slots on two risers, of which slots 12 to 16 need the second processor, slots 1 to 4 need the third processor and slots 8 to 11 need the fourth processor. No PCIe slots until a primary riser is ordered; up to 16 PCIe 3.0 slots with all four processors and the primary, secondary and tertiary risers; the two-processor Entry model has 3 slots available.

Does the DL580 Gen10 have network ports built in?

No embedded NIC on the CTO server: networking comes from the FlexibleLOM slot, with NIC cards also available in the expansion slots. The pre-configured (BTO) models ship with a FlexibleLOM: 1Gb 4-port FLR-T I350-T4V2 (Entry), 10Gb FLR-SFP+ 57810S or FLR-T BCM57416 (Base), 10/25Gb FLR-SFP28 MCX4121A-ACFT or BCM57414 (Performance). A CTO server must be ordered with at least one network adapter, chosen from the FlexibleLOM adapters. Every riser is an option and a CTO server must be ordered with a primary riser; the four-processor pre-configured models list 16 PCIe 3.0 slots, which only the Primary 7-slot Riser 878214-B21 with the Secondary and Tertiary 9-slot Riser 872340-B21 gives.

Will an OCP 3.0 adapter fit a DL580 Gen10?

HPE's QuickSpecs for the DL580 Gen10 give it one FlexibleLOM slot: “None. FlexibleLOM slot” (page 29). The list HPE gives for it has FlexibleLOM adapters for that slot and no OCP 3.0 adapters.

Are cables or transceivers included?

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately. HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber-optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 37).

Do I need the second processor for more adapters?

Slots 12 to 16 need the second processor, slots 1 to 4 need the third processor and slots 8 to 11 need the fourth processor. Slots 5 to 7 run from processor 1. HPE: “13 PCIe 3.0 x16 Halflength/ full height Proc 2” (page 9).

What do “QuickSpecs version 52” and “earlier HPE edition” mean on the list?

An adapter tagged “Listed in QuickSpecs version 52” is in version 52 of HPE's QuickSpecs for the DL580 Gen10, the edition this page is built from. One tagged “Listed in an earlier HPE edition” was listed for this server in an earlier edition of HPE's QuickSpecs and is not in version 52.

Which Fibre Channel HBAs does HPE list for the DL580 Gen10?

HPE lists Emulex and QLogic Fibre Channel HBAs (16Gb and 32Gb, one and two port) and two converged network adapters under HPE Storage Options. HPE's QuickSpecs have listed 8 Fibre Channel HBAs for it across editions, by model: Emulex SN1200E and SN1600E; QLogic SN1100Q and SN1600Q. They are in the Fibre Channel HBAs section of this page.
