DL580 Gen10 Storage Controller Specifications
- Embedded controller: Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 software RAID, SATA only, UEFI mode only, off by default until enabled
- Essential RAID: Smart Array E208i-p and E208e-p, eight internal or eight external lanes, no cache, both 12G SAS on PCIe
- Performance RAID: Smart Array P408i-p with 2GB cache on eight internal lanes, P408e-p with 4GB on eight external; HPE also specifies the P824i-p MR
- Form factor: plug-in PCIe cards only — AROC modular controllers are not supported
- Where they go: internal controllers and SAS expanders belong in the primary or tertiary riser, not the secondary
- Cache backup and licences: the 96W Smart Storage Battery, rated for up to 20 devices, is required with performance RAID cards, which are also where SmartCache applies

Two letters carry the decision. The middle one is direction: an i-suffix card drives the internal backplane, an e-suffix card drives an enclosure outside, and neither substitutes for the other. The leading letter is cache, with E-series carrying none and P-series 2GB or 4GB. The trailing p is not optional here, because an AROC card has nowhere to go.
Choosing the Right DL580 Gen10 Storage Controller
- Settle internal or external before the model number. An e-suffix card will not drive the bays at the front of the chassis, whatever cache it carries.
- Budget for the battery with a P-series card. HPE requires the 96W Smart Storage Battery with performance RAID controllers, and one covers up to 20 devices.
- Keep the card out of the secondary riser. Internal controllers and SAS expanders go in the primary or tertiary riser.
- Do not plan on an AROC card. The modular controllers common on two-socket ProLiants have no slot here.
- The embedded controller is SATA only. If the array is SAS, an E208 or P408 card is not an upgrade but a requirement.

Does the DL580 Gen10 come with a RAID controller?
It has the embedded HPE Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 software RAID, which supports SATA drives, runs in UEFI mode only and is off by default. Pre-configured models also shipped with a P408i-p plug-in card.
Can I use an AROC controller in a DL580 Gen10?

What is the difference between the E208 and P408 cards?
Cache. The E208i-p and E208e-p are Essential RAID cards with no cache; the P408i-p carries 2GB and the P408e-p carries 4GB, and both depend on the Smart Storage Battery to protect the cache contents.
Do I need the Smart Storage Battery?
With a performance RAID controller, yes - HPE lists the 96W Smart Storage Battery as required for those cards. A single battery supports up to 20 devices, so one covers multiple controllers.
Which riser should the storage controller go in?
The primary or tertiary riser. HPE states that internal storage controllers and SAS expanders are not supported in the secondary riser on this server.
Can I connect external storage to a DL580 Gen10?
