How to choose a DL385 Gen10 Plus network adapter

Rule 1

Decide the OCP 3.0 adapter first

HPE lists an OCP Upgrade Cable Kit P14603-B21; the Mellanox MCX562A OCP3 adapter P10112-B21 does not support multi-host as two x8 and needs cable P14318-001 to CPU1 to run as one x16 OCP NIC.

Rule 2

Match the cabling to the switch

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately.

HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber-optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 36)

Rule 3

Count the processors

Slots 4 to 8 need the second processor.

HPE: “2 Slots 4-6 top to bottom, requires second riser card, and second processor).” (page 2)

Rule 4

Plan the server memory

HPE notes that at least 2 GB of server memory is needed per adapter.

HPE: “A minimum of two Gigabytes (2 GB) of server memory is required per each adapter.” (page 36)

DL385 Gen10 Plus adapter questions

How many network adapters can a DL385 Gen10 Plus take?

The DL385 Gen10 Plus takes network adapters in its one OCP 3.0 slot and in up to eight PCIe 4.0 slots on three risers, of which slots 4 to 8 need the second processor. Three PCIe slots as standard in the primary riser, up to eight with two processors; the secondary and tertiary risers need the second processor. HPE lists an OCP Upgrade Cable Kit P14603-B21; the Mellanox MCX562A OCP3 adapter P10112-B21 does not support multi-host as two x8 and needs cable P14318-001 to CPU1 to run as one x16 OCP NIC.

Does the DL385 Gen10 Plus have network ports built in?

No embedded network ports: the server takes an OCP 3.0 adapter or a stand-up card. The pre-configured models ship with an OCP3 adapter: Intel I350 1GbE 4-port (plus a choice of OCP or stand-up card), BCM57416 10GbE 2-port BASE-T, BCM57412 10GbE 2-port SFP+ or BCM57414 10/25GbE 2-port SFP28.

Are cables or transceivers included?

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately. HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber-optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 36).

Do I need the second processor for more adapters?

Slots 4 to 8 need the second processor. Slots 1 to 3 run from processor 1. HPE: “2 Slots 4-6 top to bottom, requires second riser card, and second processor).” (page 2).

What do “QuickSpecs version 31” and “earlier HPE edition” mean on the list?

An adapter tagged “Listed in QuickSpecs version 31” is in version 31 of HPE's QuickSpecs for the DL385 Gen10 Plus, the edition this page is built from. One tagged “Listed in an earlier HPE edition” was listed for this server in an earlier edition of HPE's QuickSpecs and is not in version 31.
