HPE ProLiant SL165s G7 Parts
The HPE ProLiant SL165s G7 is a scalable-system node rather than a standalone rack server: a 1U full-width tray that slides into a 4U HPE ProLiant s6500 chassis, which supplies the power and the cooling for every tray in it. Every part below is genuine HPE, available new and refurbished, and tested for compatibility before it ships. Live pricing for each part number appears in the tables further down this page.
SL165s G7 Platform at a Glance
- Form factor: a 1U full-width server tray; the s6500 chassis around it is 4U, so four of these trays fill it, and HPE does not allow half-width and full-width trays to share one chassis
- Processors: up to two AMD Opteron 6000 series, eight-core or twelve-core, for 24 cores and 12MB of level 3 cache per processor, on the AMD SR5670/SP5100 chipset
- Memory: 24 DDR3 DIMM slots — twelve per processor, four channels of three — to 256GB registered or 64GB unbuffered, with Advanced ECC protection
- Drive bays: up to six 3.5-inch LFF or up to eight 2.5-inch SFF drives, all non-hot-plug, on quick release carriers
- Maximum internal storage: 12.0TB on six 2TB LFF drives, 4.0TB on eight 500GB SFF SATA drives, or 3.2TB on eight 400GB SFF solid state drives
- Storage controller: embedded HPE B110i SATA RAID controller with RAID 0, 1 and 10; SAS drives and external enclosures need a Smart Array P212, P410 or P411
- Networking: two HPE NC362i Integrated Dual Port Gigabit Server Adapters on Intel 82576 controllers — four RJ-45 ports in total
- Expansion: two optional low-profile PCI Express Gen2 slots, an x16 external slot and an x4 internal-only slot, each behind its own riser kit
- Management: HPE ProLiant Onboard Administrator powered by Lights-Out 100, IPMI 2.0 compliant, with a dedicated management port available as an option kit
- Power and cooling: both come from the s6500 chassis — Common Slot hot-plug supplies in 750W and 1200W, and eight fan bays that must all be filled
The SL165s G7 is a tray, not a standalone rack server. It is 1U full width, and the 4U HPE ProLiant s6500 chassis around it supplies the power and the cooling for all four trays it holds. So there are no power supplies, no fans and no rails fitted to the server itself — those are chassis parts, and the Common Slot supplies and s6500 fan and rail kits are listed on this page as such.
Specifications on this page are taken from the HPE QuickSpecs for this server, HPE ProLiant SL165s Generation 7 (G7) QuickSpecs, Version 11.

SL165s G7 Parts FAQ
Is the SL165s G7 a standalone server?
No. It is a 1U full-width tray that installs in an HPE ProLiant s6500 chassis, and the chassis supplies the power and the cooling. HPE's note on the server SKUs is blunt: the SKU is the tray only, and a chassis is needed to run it.
How many SL165s G7 trays fit in one chassis?
The s6500 is a 4U chassis and this tray is 1U full width, so four fill it. HPE specifies a node blank kit for every 1U full-width space left empty, so a partly filled chassis keeps its airflow.
Can SL165s G7 trays share a chassis with other SL nodes?
Intel and AMD trays can be mixed in the same s6500 chassis. What cannot be mixed is tray width - half-width and full-width trays do not go in the same chassis, and the SL165s G7 is a full-width tray.
What processors does the SL165s G7 take?
Up to two AMD Opteron 6000 series processors, eight-core or twelve-core, for 24 cores in total. Each carries 12MB of level 3 cache, and every kit comes complete with heatsink and fans.
How much memory does an SL165s G7 hold?
256GB using Registered DIMMs across all 24 slots, or 64GB using Unbuffered DIMMs across 16 of them. With only one processor fitted, half the slots are unavailable.
Are the drives in an SL165s G7 hot-plug?
No. Both the six 3.5-inch LFF bays and the eight 2.5-inch SFF bays are non-hot-plug, on quick release carriers. Changing a drive means taking the tray out of the chassis, which is why HPE sells a node blank for the gap it leaves.
