ProLiant BL Blade Server Parts
A ProLiant BL server blade is not a standalone server. It has no power supply, no fans and no rails of its own: it slides into an enclosure that supplies power, cooling, networking and management for every blade in it. That single fact decides most blade parts questions, because it moves whole categories of part off the blade and onto the enclosure. Every part on the model pages below is genuine HPE, available new and refurbished, and tested for compatibility before it ships.
What Defines a BL Server Blade
- The enclosure generation has to match: blades with a c in the model number, such as the BL460c, need a c-Class BladeSystem enclosure. The earlier p-Class blades, such as the BL20p, need a p-Class enclosure. The two are mechanically and electrically different and do not interchange.
- Power supplies and fans are enclosure parts: there is nothing to populate on the blade itself. If a blade will not power on and the enclosure is reporting a power or cooling fault, the part you need belongs to the enclosure.
- Expansion is by mezzanine card, not PCIe: mezzanine cards sit flat on the blade and connect through the enclosure midplane to interconnect modules at the back. There are no PCIe slots on the blade to fill.
- Storage on the blade is small and local: one or two small form factor bays, sized to hold an operating system rather than data. Capacity comes from a storage blade in the enclosure or from shared storage.
- Half-height and full-height: the physical height of the blade decides how many fit in an enclosure and how many mezzanine slots and DIMM slots it can carry. It is worth knowing which you have before ordering anything that mounts inside.
- Management is split: iLO runs on the blade, while the Onboard Administrator runs in the enclosure and owns bay assignment, power budgeting and firmware for the shared hardware.
Half the parts you might look for are not blade parts at all. A BL blade has no power supply, no fans and no rails — the enclosure supplies power, cooling, networking and management. If a blade will not power on while the enclosure reports a power or cooling fault, the part you need belongs to the enclosure, not to the blade.

A blade built to drive graphics has its own family in ProLiant WS Workstation Blade Parts. If the machine has its own power supplies and rails it is not a blade at all: try ProLiant DL Rack Server Parts for a rack chassis or ProLiant ML Tower Server Parts for a tower. Trays that share a chassis but are not blades are in ProLiant SL Scalable Server Parts and ProLiant XL Server Parts. Every family sits under HPE parts by server model.
ProLiant BL Blade Server Parts FAQ
Can a blade run outside its enclosure?
No. A blade has no power supply, no fans and no rails of its own, so it needs an enclosure to supply power, cooling, networking and management before it will start.
Will a c-Class blade fit a p-Class enclosure?
No. The two enclosure generations are mechanically and electrically different. Blades with a c in the model number need a c-Class enclosure, and the p-Class blades need their own.
Where do the network ports come from on a blade?
From the blade's embedded adapters and from mezzanine cards, which connect through the enclosure midplane to interconnect modules at the back of the enclosure. There are no PCIe slots on the blade.
How much storage does a blade hold?
Only what fits in its own small form factor bays, typically one or two. Larger capacity comes from a storage blade in the enclosure or from shared storage on the network.
Are power supplies and fans blade parts?
No, they belong to the enclosure. A blade that will not power on while the enclosure reports a power or cooling fault needs an enclosure part, not a blade part.
Why are the BL860c and BL870c listed with the ProLiant blades?
They carry the same c-Class suffix and are grouped in this family on the store. They are Integrity server blades rather than ProLiant, so read the model off the blade before ordering.
