The cage decides what an NVMe drive can do, not the drive. The same U.3 SFF SSD runs at one lane in the 8SFF Tri-Mode cage behind an MR controller and at four lanes in the 8SFF x4 NVMe cage; E3.S EDSFF drives fit only the 12EDSFF cage, which cannot share the chassis with the NVMe x4 cage and holds the server to a 25°C inlet limit. Match the drive to the cage you have, or budget for the cage and its cable kit alongside the drive.

Which ML350 Gen12 cage takes which drive?

Two rules shape the mix. The NVMe x4 cage and the 12EDSFF cage cannot be installed together, while either can sit beside Tri-Mode SFF and LFF cages. And with direct attach, one processor supports two x4 cages on x2 cable kits; a third cage, or x4 cabling beyond one cage, needs the second processor.

Choosing the Right ML350 Gen12 Drive

• Match the carrier in the part name. SFF parts here are BC, LFF parts LP or LPC, EDSFF parts E3.S EC1; nothing on this page is a Smart Carrier drive.
• 24G SAS is SFF only and costs a fan kit. The LFF backplane supports up to 12G SAS, and HPE requires the Redundant Fan Kit when a 24G Mixed Use SAS SSD is selected.
• EDSFF is a commitment. One cage, twelve drives, two processors for direct attach or two MR932i-p controllers, both fan kits, and the server held to 25°C inlet.
• The MR932i-p is an NVMe controller here. HPE states it supports NVMe and SAS SSD only, and on the ML350 Gen12 only NVMe SSDs in the 8SFF x4 or 12EDSFF cage.

ML350 Gen12 Drives FAQ

How many drives fit in an ML350 Gen12?
Up to 24 SFF with three 8SFF cages, 12 LFF with three 4LFF cages, or 12 EDSFF plus 8 SFF plus 4 LFF with one of each. The 12EDSFF cage is limited to one per server and cannot be combined with the 8SFF x4 NVMe cage.

Does the ML350 Gen12 support NVMe drives?
Yes, three ways. U.3 NVMe SFF drives run at one lane in the 8SFF Tri-Mode cage behind an MR controller, or at four lanes in the 8SFF x4 NVMe cage; E3.S EDSFF NVMe drives need the 12EDSFF cage. HPE documents up to 24 NVMe drives at x2 or 16 at x4.

What is the largest drive for the ML350 Gen12?
For hard drives, 26TB SAS or SATA 7.2K LFF, for a documented 312TB across twelve bays. For SSDs, 30.72TB Read Intensive NVMe in both U.3 SFF and E3.S EDSFF form.

Can I mix LFF and SFF cages in one ML350 Gen12?
Yes. HPE supports mixing the 8SFF x1 Tri-Mode and 4LFF cages, and either of them alongside an NVMe x4 or 12EDSFF cage. The one combination not allowed is the NVMe x4 cage together with the 12EDSFF cage.

Do EDSFF drives have special requirements?
Yes. They can only be selected with the 12EDSFF Drive Cage Kit, which needs two processors for direct attach or two MR932i-p controllers on the PCIe cable kit, plus the Redundant Fan Kit and the Second CPU Fan Kit, and HPE limits EDSFF configurations to a 25 degree C maximum inlet temperature.

Where does the operating system go?
On the HPE NS204i-u v2 boot device, a hot-plug RAID 1 pair of M.2 NVMe drives in 480GB, 960GB or 960GB SED form, mounted at the front or rear with the matching enablement kit. That keeps every front bay for data.
