How to choose an ML350 Gen12 network adapter

Rule 1

Decide the OCP 3.0 adapter first

WOL and shared NIC work only in OCP B; an OCP card in OCP B needs an OCP B Enablement Kit; OCP A has x8 PCIe 5.0 lanes from the system board, and an x16 OCP NIC in OCP A may need an OCP A Enablement Kit.

HPE: “OCP A slot provides x8 PCIe 5.0 lanes from system board, additional OCP A Enablement Kit may require for x16 OCP NIC to install on OCP A slot.” (page 37)

Rule 2

Match the cabling to the switch

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately.

HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber-optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 37)

Rule 3

Count the processors

Slots 5 to 10 need the second processor.

HPE: “Notes: When this Riser Kit is selected, a second processor is required to support expansion card installation and 2 MCIO connectors from CPU2 will be used. Without Second processor, the PCIe slots from tertiary riser will not have function and only able to provide power source for internal LTO tape drive.” (page 35)

Rule 4

Check the cooling

With InfiniBand adapters: active optical cables (AOC) with processors over 270W limit the inlet to 25°C; AOC with processors of 270W or less allow 30°C with up to two LFF and/or Tri-Mode SFF drive cages; direct attach cables (DAC) allow 30°C with any drive cages.

HPE: “When AOC (Active Optical Cables) and processors TDP equal to or less than 270W are selected, limited to 30°C maximum inlet temperature is supported with up to 2x LFF and/or Tri-Mode SFF drive cage.” (page 38)

ML350 Gen12 adapter questions

How many network adapters can an ML350 Gen12 take?

The ML350 Gen12 takes network adapters in its two OCP 3.0 slots and in up to 10 PCIe 5.0 slots, of which slots 5 to 10 need the second processor. Four PCIe 5.0 x8 slots on the primary riser as standard; slots 5 to 10 (secondary and tertiary risers) need the second processor, for up to 10 slots. WOL and shared NIC work only in OCP B; an OCP card in OCP B needs an OCP B Enablement Kit; OCP A has x8 PCIe 5.0 lanes from the system board, and an x16 OCP NIC in OCP A may need an OCP A Enablement Kit.

Does the ML350 Gen12 have network ports built in?

No embedded network ports; an OCP or a stand-up network card is chosen. The NC CTO server P72297-B21 takes an OCP networking adapter and/or PCIe stand-up adapters; the Broadcom BCM5719 1Gb 4-port BASE-T OCP3 Adapter P51181-B21 is selected by default.

Are cables or transceivers included?

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately. HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber-optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 37).

Do I need the second processor for more adapters?

Slots 5 to 10 need the second processor. Slots 1 to 4 run from processor 1. HPE: “Notes: When this Riser Kit is selected, a second processor is required to support expansion card installation and 2 MCIO connectors from CPU2 will be used. Without Second processor, the PCIe slots from tertiary riser will not have function and only able to provide power source for internal LTO tape drive.” (page 35).

What does “Listed in QuickSpecs version 18” mean?

It means the adapter is in version 18 of HPE's QuickSpecs for the ML350 Gen12, the edition this page is built from.

Which Fibre Channel HBAs does HPE list for the ML350 Gen12?

HPE lists four Fibre Channel HBAs (SN1610Q 32Gb and SN1700Q 64Gb, 1-port and 2-port) and refers to HPE's adapter catalog for Fibre Channel converged network adapters. HPE's QuickSpecs list 4 Fibre Channel HBAs for it, by model: SN1610Q and SN1700Q. They are in the Fibre Channel HBAs section of this page.

What if the adapter I need is out of stock?
