Which slot does your adapter go in?

Slot 1 is the only slot on this board with more than four electrical lanes, and it is also where a SAS controller has to go — HPE states the two cannot be selected together because both need it. So on a server with an internal RAID card, every network adapter in the machine runs on four PCIe 4.0 lanes in a connector wide enough to suggest eight, which is worth knowing before committing to a four-port 25 Gigabit card. Where a x8 controller and a x8 network card go in together, HPE's own guidance is controller in slot 1 and network card in slot 2.

Choosing the Right ML30 Gen11 Network Adapter

• Count what you already have. Four embedded 1GbE BASE-T ports cover a lot of small-site networking, and a 1Gb add-in card only makes sense when the requirement is more ports rather than more speed.
• Match the media, not just the number. BASE-T cards take RJ-45 copper; SFP+ and SFP28 cards take direct attach cables or transceivers, which are bought separately from the adapter.
• Budget the fan kit with the card. The Front PCI Fan and Baffle Kit is required with any PCIe card on the configure-to-order chassis, and on the entry build with anything other than a 1Gb adapter or the E208e-p.
• Half-length slots limit the card, not the speed. Slots 3 and 4 take half-length cards only, so a full-length adapter has to go in slot 1 or 2 — and slot 1 may already be spoken for by a controller.
• Remember the shared iLO port. Management traffic runs over network port 1 unless the iLO/NIC/M.2/COM Port Kit is fitted, so an add-in card does not on its own separate management from production.

Are cables or transceivers included with SFP28 adapters?
No. Direct attach copper cables for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones, are ordered separately. Only the BASE-T cards use ordinary RJ-45 copper.

Can I give iLO its own network port?
Yes, with the ML30 Gen11 iLO/NIC/M.2/COM Port Kit. It adds a dedicated 1Gb management port along with a serial port cable and an M.2 slot. Without it, iLO shares embedded network port 1.
