HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen10 Networking Adapters
Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen10, new and refurbished. The server has two embedded Gigabit ports from the 361i adapter, one of which is shared with iLO, so an add-in card here is about 10 Gigabit, more ports, or freeing that shared port for data.
ML30 Gen10 Networking Specifications
- Embedded networking: HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i Adapter, two rear RJ-45 ports, one of them shared with HPE iLO
- Management port: a dedicated iLO management port is optional, supplied in the DL20/ML30 Gen10 M.2/Dedicated iLO and Serial Port Kit (P06687-B21) rather than as a network card
- Expansion slots: four PCIe 3.0 slots — slot 1 electrically x16 from the processor, slots 2, 3 and 4 electrically x4 from the chipset
- Adapter limit: a maximum of two HPE networking adapters, and a maximum of one Ethernet 10Gb 2-port BASE-T X550-AT2 Adapter
- 1 Gigabit cards: Ethernet 1Gb 4-port BASE-T BCM5719 and I350-T4V2, and Ethernet 1Gb 2-port BASE-T BCM5720 and I350-T2V2
- 10 Gigabit cards: Ethernet 10Gb 2-port BASE-T 57810S, BCM57416, QL41401-A2G and X550-AT2, plus Ethernet 10Gb 2-port SFP+ 57810S and X710-DA2
- Cooling requirement: 10Gb adapters require the ML30 Gen10 Front PCI Fan and Baffle Kit (P06303-B21), which is included on pre-configured performance models and has to be added on others
- Not supported: SR-IOV
Only slot 1 is electrically x16, and slot 3 is the trap. It carries an x16 connector with four PCIe 3.0 lanes behind it, so a card seats there happily and gets a quarter of the lanes its connector implies. The server also accepts a maximum of two networking adapters, and 10Gb cards require the Front PCI Fan and Baffle Kit.
Which slot should the card go in?
| Slot | Connector width | Electrical lanes | Form factor | Fed by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | x16 | x16 | Full height, full length | Processor |
| 2 | x8 | x4 | Full height, half length | Chipset |
| 3 | x16 | x4 | Full height, full length | Chipset |
| 4 | x8 | x4 | Full height, half length | Chipset |
Only slot 1 is electrically x16, and slot 3 is the trap: it has an x16 connector with four lanes behind it, so a card seats there happily and gets a quarter of the lanes its connector implies. Plan the slots as a whole before ordering, because the Smart Array card and any GPU are competing for the same four slots, and on a server limited to two network adapters the order they go in is worth a moment's thought.
Choosing the Right ML30 Gen10 Network Adapter
- Two adapters is the documented maximum. Four quad-port cards will not fit the intent of this platform even if they fit the slots.
- Budget the fan kit with a 10Gb card. The Front PCI Fan and Baffle Kit is required for 10Gb adapters, and a card ordered without it is an incomplete build.
- Only one X550-AT2 per server. The other 10Gb BASE-T cards do not carry that restriction.
- A dedicated iLO port is a kit, not a card. If the goal is to stop iLO sharing a data port, the part to buy is the M.2/Dedicated iLO and Serial Port Kit.
- Check the workload for SR-IOV. This server does not support it, so a virtualisation design that depends on SR-IOV needs a different platform rather than a different card.

Network cards share four slots with the storage controller — see ML30 Gen10 storage controllers before planning the layout. Also available: ML30 Gen10 memory, drives, processors and power supplies, or the full ML30 Gen10 parts listing. Other models are listed under HPE parts by server model.
ML30 Gen10 Networking Adapters FAQ
How many network ports does an ML30 Gen10 have as standard?
Two. The embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i Adapter provides two rear RJ-45 ports, and one of those is shared with iLO unless the optional dedicated iLO management port is fitted.
How many network adapters can I add?
Two. HPE documents a maximum of two HPE networking adapters in this server, and a maximum of one Ethernet 10Gb 2-port BASE-T X550-AT2 Adapter among them.
Do 10Gb cards need anything else fitted?
Yes. The ML30 Gen10 Front PCI Fan and Baffle Kit is required for 10Gb adapters. It is included on pre-configured performance models and has to be ordered separately on others.
Which PCIe slot is the fastest?
Slot 1, the only one with sixteen electrical lanes, and the only one fed directly by the processor. Slots 2, 3 and 4 all run four lanes from the chipset, even where the connector is physically wider.
Does the ML30 Gen10 support SR-IOV?
No. HPE documents the ML30 Gen10 as not supporting SR-IOV, so it is not a matter of choosing a different adapter.
Can I give iLO its own network port?
Yes, with the DL20/ML30 Gen10 M.2/Dedicated iLO and Serial Port Kit. That kit adds a dedicated iLO management port and a serial port, and carries an M.2 slot as well.
