Those ceilings assume a front end built out to match, and most machines are not: the chassis ships with one box of eight. NVMe needs the hardest look, because bay count depends on processor quantity and riser choice as much as on the boxes — HPE publishes a recommended configuration table precisely because some combinations leave bays connected to nothing.
Choosing the Right DL580 Gen10 Drive
- Count the boxes before the drives. A bay exists only where a bay kit is fitted, and a stock DL580 Gen10 has eight.
- SAS needs a controller. The embedded S100i drives SATA only, so a SAS drive is unusable without a plug-in Smart Array card.
- Treat NVMe count as a configuration question. Processor quantity, drive box and riser all decide how many NVMe bays come up.
- Match the transfer rate along the whole path. HPE notes that drive, controller, firmware and backplane negotiate down to the slowest component.
- Pick the endurance class for the workload. Write Intensive, Mixed Use and Read Intensive SSDs share a bay and differ in rated daily writes.

How many drives does a DL580 Gen10 hold?
Eight hot-plug 2.5-inch drives as shipped, in Box 1, and up to 48 once Boxes 1 to 6 are built out with drive bay kits. Up to 20 of those bays can carry NVMe drives.
Does the DL580 Gen10 take 3.5-inch drives?
No. The front end is small form factor throughout - eight 2.5-inch bays as standard and 48 at maximum. There is no large form factor configuration for this chassis.
Can I use SATA drives with the built-in RAID?
Yes, that is what the embedded HPE Smart Array S100i SR Gen10 software RAID is for. It runs in UEFI mode only and is off by default, and it does not support SAS drives - those need an E208 or P408 plug-in card.
How many NVMe drives can a DL580 Gen10 take?
Up to 20, but only in specific combinations of processor count, drive box and riser kit. HPE publishes a recommended NVMe configuration table because the wrong combination leaves bays non-functional - an eight-bay NVMe kit in Box 1, for instance, lights only the first four.
