HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 Networking Adapters
Genuine HPE Ethernet adapters for the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9, new and refurbished. There is no fixed onboard NIC on this server — networking comes from a dedicated FlexibleLOM slot, so whatever ports the machine has today are whatever FlexibleLOM card was fitted to it, and that card can be changed.
DL560 Gen9 Networking Specifications
- Embedded networking: one dedicated FlexibleLOM slot, taking 1Gb, 10Gb, 10GBASE-T or converged adapters; only one FlexibleLOM can be installed and it is field-changeable
- Factory fit: Entry models shipped the Ethernet 1Gb 4-port 331FLR, and Base and Performance models the FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 533FLR-T
- FlexibleLOM cards listed: 1Gb four-port 331FLR and 366FLR, 10Gb 533FLR-T, 534FLR-SFP+, 556FLR-SFP+, 560FLR-SFP+ and 561FLR-T, and the 10/25Gb 640FLR-SFP28
- Standup adapters listed: 1Gb 331T, 332T, 361T and 366T, 10Gb 530SFP, 530T, 546SFP+, 560SFP+, 561T and 562SFP+, and 25Gb 640SFP28 and 620QSFP28
- Expansion: seven PCIe 3.0 slots, but only slots one to three on the primary riser belong to processor one; slot seven and the optional secondary riser's slots four to six belong to processor two
- 10Gb requirement: HPE documents a minimum of 2GB of server memory for each 10Gb adapter installed, and direct attach copper cables or fibre transceivers are bought separately
There is no fixed onboard NIC on this server. Networking comes from one dedicated FlexibleLOM slot, so the ports a DL560 Gen9 has today are whichever FlexibleLOM was fitted, and only one can be installed. Standup cards are a different question: a single-processor machine has three usable PCIe slots, not seven.
Which slot will the adapter actually go in?
| Adapter | Position | Available when |
|---|---|---|
| FlexibleLOM (FLR) | Dedicated FlexibleLOM slot | Always — it is not one of the seven PCIe slots, and only one can be fitted |
| Standup PCIe card | Slots 1 to 3, primary riser | With one processor installed |
| Standup PCIe card | Slot 7, low profile | With a second processor installed |
| Standup PCIe card | Slots 4 to 6, secondary riser | With a second processor and the secondary three-slot riser kit |
This is where a four-socket machine catches people out. A single-processor DL560 Gen9 has three usable PCIe slots, not seven, and a card bought for slot seven or for the secondary riser will sit in a server that never sees it. The FlexibleLOM slot is the exception and the reason to start there: it is separate from all seven, so a network upgrade through the FlexibleLOM competes with nothing, while a standup card has to win a slot against a storage controller or an accelerator.
Choosing the Right DL560 Gen9 Network Adapter
- Check which FlexibleLOM is fitted first. Only one can be installed, so a second FlexibleLOM is a replacement rather than an addition — and a 10Gb FlexibleLOM may make a standup card unnecessary.
- Count live slots against processors, not against the rear panel. Three slots with one processor; slot seven and the secondary riser's three more need the second.
- Budget the memory for 10Gb. HPE calls for at least 2GB of server memory per 10Gb adapter, so a pair of cards assumes headroom in the DIMM configuration.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ and SFP28 cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
- Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect, whatever the line rate on the box says.
Complete Your DL560 Gen9 Build
Ten and 25 Gigabit adapters ask for memory headroom and a free slot — see DL560 Gen9 memory and processors, since the processor count decides how many slots are live. DL560 Gen9 Networking Adapters FAQ
How many network ports does a DL560 Gen9 have as standard?
That depends on the FlexibleLOM card fitted, because this server has no fixed onboard NIC. Entry models shipped a four-port 1Gb 331FLR and Base and Performance models a two-port 10Gb 533FLR-T.
What is a FlexibleLOM slot?
A dedicated adapter slot separate from the seven PCIe expansion slots. It lets the server's embedded networking be chosen as 1Gb, 10Gb, 10GBASE-T or converged, and changed later without giving up a riser slot.
Can I fit two FlexibleLOM adapters?
No. Only one FlexibleLOM can be installed in the server. Additional ports beyond that come from standup PCIe adapters in the risers.
Does the DL560 Gen9 support 25 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an adapter. The 10/25Gb 640FLR-SFP28 is a FlexibleLOM option, and the 640SFP28 and four-by-25Gb 620QSFP28 are standup PCIe cards.
Why will my PCIe network card not come up?
Check which slot it is in against the processor count. Slots one to three belong to processor one, while slot seven and the secondary riser's slots four to six belong to processor two and are unavailable until it is installed.
Are cables included with SFP+ adapters?
No. Direct attach copper cables for short runs, and transceivers plus fibre for longer ones, are purchased separately from the adapter.
