HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12 Drives
The HPE ProLiant DL340 Gen12 takes 2.5-inch SFF BC drives, 3.5-inch LFF LP hard drives and LFF LPC SSDs in the LFF model, or E3.S EC1 NVMe drives in an EDSFF cage. The drive cage and the controller decide the interface. The 8SFF U.3 Tri-Mode cages take SAS, SATA or NVMe drives; the 8SFF x4 U.2 NVMe cage and the 2SFF cages take NVMe U.3 drives. MR200 and MR400 series controllers support SAS, SATA and NVMe; the MR900 series supports SAS and NVMe SSDs only. Intel VROC does not support SATA drives.

Which drives fit the DL340 Gen12
The bay sets the drive's size and carrier; the drive cage and the controller set the interface. HPE's maximum counts:

SFF, LFF or GPU model? How to tell
- Look at the front. Small 2.5-inch bays (8 in Box 3 by default) is the SFF model. Large 3.5-inch bays (4 in Box 3 by default) is the LFF model. Front GPU cages in Box 1 and Box 3 is the Front GPU model.
- Match the product number: P71452-B21 SFF, P75727-B21 LFF, P75728-B21 Front GPU.
- Check the controller. HPE lists MR216i, MR408i and MR416i controllers (MR200 and MR400 series) and the MR932i-p (MR900 series). With Intel VROC and no MR controller, SATA drives are not supported.

Three rules before you order
Match the carrier, not only the size
HPE lists only SFF BC drives for the DL340 Gen12's 2.5-inch bays. The 3.5-inch bays take LFF LP hard drives and LFF LPC SSDs, and the EDSFF cages take E3S EC1 drives.
The controller sets the interface
MR200 and MR400 series controllers support SAS and SATA hard drives and SAS, SATA and NVMe SSDs. The MR900 series supports SAS and NVMe SSDs only. Intel VROC supports up to 32 NVMe drives, depending on processor, and no SATA drives.
Pick the cage for the drive type
The 8SFF x1 and x4 U.3 Tri-Mode cages each support up to 8 SAS, SATA or NVMe U.3 drives. The 8SFF x4 U.2 NVMe cage supports up to 8 NVMe U.3 dynamic drives, and the 2SFF front cages up to 2 NVMe U.3 drives.

Does the DL340 Gen12 support NVMe drives?
Yes. U.3 NVMe SSDs fit the 8SFF Tri-Mode cages, the 8SFF x4 U.2 NVMe cage and the 2SFF cages, and the SFF model takes up to 36 E3.S NVMe SSDs with the EDSFF front cage. Intel VROC supports up to 32 NVMe drives, depending on processor.
How many drives does the DL340 Gen12 hold?
Up to 24 SFF drives or 36 E3.S drives in the SFF model, up to 12 LFF drives in the LFF model, and up to 8 SFF or 12 E3.S drives in the Front GPU model, by HPE's count.
Can I run SATA drives without a RAID controller?
No. Intel VROC does not support SATA drives. SATA drives need an MR200 or MR400 series controller; the MR900 series does not support SATA drives either.
Does the MR932i-p controller support hard drives?
No. HPE's support matrix shows the MR900 series supports SAS and NVMe SSDs only, not SATA or SAS hard drives or SATA SSDs.
What boot drive options does the DL340 Gen12 have?
The HPE NS204i-u v2 includes two NVMe SSDs with RAID 1 preconfigured. HPE lists 480GB (P78279-B21), 960GB (P81160-B21) and 960GB SED (P81162-B21) versions. It needs the NS204i-u Boot Extension Enablement Kit (P71433-B21), and the SFF and GPU models also support front mounting.
