HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 Memory
The DL180 Gen9 has 16 DIMM slots, 8 per processor, and takes HPE DDR4 memory. Which kit you need depends on the processor: E5-2600 v4 processors use DDR4-2400 kits; E5-2600 v3 processors use DDR4-2133 kits. The server supports up to 1TB with two processors and 64GB LRDIMMs in every slot.

How processor, population and speed fit together
Each processor has 4 memory channels with 2 slots per channel. The kit rating is the ceiling; the processor model and how many DIMMs share a channel set the speed you actually get.

HPE: depending on the memory configuration and processor model, the memory speed may run at 2400, 2133, 1866 or 1600 MT/s; its processor table rates each model (E5-2650 v4 and faster 2400; E5-2620 v4 to 2640 v4 and the v3 2650 / 2660 2133; E5-2620 v3 to 2640 v3 and the v4 2603 / 2609 1866; E5-2603 v3 and 2609 v3 1600). The QuickSpecs give population guidance only; the picker uses 1, 2, 4 or 8 DIMMs per processor.
Three rules that avoid a return
1 Match the kit to the processor
DDR4-2400 kits are listed for E5-2600 v4 processors and DDR4-2133 kits for v3. If you are adding to memory that is already installed, match the part number on the existing DIMM label.
2 RDIMM or LRDIMM, never both
HPE does not support mixing DIMM types. Keep every DIMM in a bank the same capacity and rank, and populate both processors identically.
3 Fill channels for bandwidth
Four matching DIMMs per processor fill every channel once; eight per processor fills the server. Slots 9 to 16 need the second processor.
DL180 Gen9 memory questions
How much memory does the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 support?
Up to 1TB with two processors and 64GB LRDIMMs in every slot. With registered DIMMs the maximum is 512GB (16 x 32GB). A single processor can use only its 8 slots.
What type of memory does the DL180 Gen9 use?
HPE DDR4 registered and load-reduced DIMMs. E5-2600 v3 processors take the DDR4-2133 kits; E5-2600 v4 processors take the DDR4-2400 kits. Registered DIMMs run from 4GB to 32GB; load-reduced DIMMs from 16GB to 64GB.
Can I use DDR4-2133 memory with a v4 processor?
Buy the family HPE lists for your processor. HPE notes that DIMMs of different speeds may be mixed and the server then runs them all at a common speed, so adding 2133 kits to 2400 kits slows the whole server. If the server already has memory installed, add the same part number.
What speed will the memory run at?
Up to the kit rating by processor model: 2400 MT/s for v4 kits on the E5-2650 v4 and faster, 2133 on the E5-2620 v4 to 2640 v4 and on the v3 2650 / 2660, 1866 on the E5-2620 v3 to 2640 v3 and the v4 2603 / 2609, 1600 on the E5-2603 v3 and 2609 v3. With two DIMMs per channel, HPE's tables show the v4 registered DIMMs at 2133 MT/s, the v4 load-reduced DIMMs keeping 2400, and every v3 kit at 2133.
