HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 Memory

Genuine HPE DDR4 SmartMemory for the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9, new and refurbished. The server carries 16 DIMM slots — eight per processor, four channels per processor, two DIMMs per channel — and two rules decide most orders: Registered and Load Reduced cannot be mixed, and quad-rank RDIMMs are not supported in this server at all.

DL180 Gen9 Memory Specifications

  • Type: HPE SmartMemory DDR4 Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM); UDIMM, RDIMM and LRDIMM are distinct technologies and cannot be mixed within a server
  • Slots: 16 in total, two per channel across four channels per processor; with one processor installed only half are available, and slots 9 to 16 need the second processor
  • Maximum capacity: 512GB on sixteen 32GB dual-rank RDIMMs at 2400MT/s, or 1TB on sixteen 64GB quad-rank LRDIMMs at 2400MT/s
  • Rank rules: quad-rank RDIMMs are not supported in the DL180 Gen9; quad-rank LRDIMMs are capable of up to two DIMMs per channel
  • Speed grades: DDR4-2400 CAS-17 kits belong with E5-2600 v4 processors and DDR4-2133 CAS-15 kits with E5-2600 v3; HPE documents the DDR4-2133 parts as supported only on v3 processors
  • Protection modes: Advanced ECC single device data correction, Online Spare, and inter-socket Mirroring with dynamic failover

Registered and Load Reduced cannot be mixed, and quad-rank RDIMMs are not supported here at all. RDIMMs reach 512GB in this server; LRDIMMs reach 1TB, and on an E5-2600 v4 machine they hold 2400MT/s at two DIMMs per channel where RDIMMs step down to 2133MT/s. Check what is fitted before ordering a single kit.

Those speeds are the E5-2600 v4 picture, and they are the real argument for load reduced memory: fill all sixteen slots with RDIMMs and the bank steps down to 2133MT/s, where LRDIMMs hold 2400MT/s at the same two DIMMs per channel. On an E5-2600 v3 machine the question does not arise, because every v3 kit runs at 2133MT/s whether one or two DIMMs occupy each channel — there, capacity is the only thing the choice buys.

Choosing the Right DL180 Gen9 Memory

  • Check which technology is fitted before ordering. Registered and Load Reduced cannot be mixed, so a single wrong module means rebuilding the bank rather than simply losing a little speed.
  • Do not buy quad-rank RDIMMs for this server. HPE states plainly that quad-rank RDIMMs are not supported in the DL180 Gen9; quad rank is an LRDIMM-only proposition here.
  • Match the kit to the processor family. DDR4-2133 CAS-15 kits are documented for E5-2600 v3 processors, and DDR4-2400 CAS-17 kits for v4.
  • The processor sets the ceiling, not the DIMM. An E5-2609v3 or E5-2603v3 holds memory at 1600MT/s and an E5-2609v4 at 1866MT/s, however fast the modules are rated.
  • Every option kit here is a single DIMM. A 16GB kit is one 16GB module, so a full sixteen-slot build is sixteen kits, and HPE asks that capacity be balanced across both processors.

Complete Your DL180 Gen9 Build

Memory speed is set by the processor as much as by the module — see DL180 Gen9 processors before deciding on clock. DL180 Gen9 Memory FAQ

What is the maximum memory in a DL180 Gen9?
1TB with Load Reduced DIMMs, reached with sixteen 64GB quad-rank LRDIMMs at 2400MT/s. With Registered DIMMs the ceiling is 512GB, using sixteen 32GB dual-rank modules.

How many memory slots does the DL180 Gen9 have?
Sixteen, arranged as eight per processor across four channels with two DIMMs per channel. If only one processor is installed, only half of them are available.

Can I mix RDIMMs and LRDIMMs in a DL180 Gen9?
No. UDIMM, RDIMM and LRDIMM are distinct memory technologies and cannot be mixed within a server. Whichever type is fitted is what an upgrade has to match.

Are quad-rank memory modules supported in the DL180 Gen9?
Only as LRDIMMs. HPE states that quad rank RDIMMs are not supported in this server, while quad rank LRDIMMs are capable of up to two DIMMs per channel.

Why does my DL180 Gen9 memory run below 2400MT/s?
Either the processor or the population. E5-2600 v3 processors run DDR4 at 2133MT/s or lower, and on a v4 server Registered DIMMs step from 2400 to 2133MT/s once both DIMMs on a channel are filled.

Do HPE memory kits for this server contain more than one DIMM?
No. Every DDR4 option kit listed for this server is a single DIMM, so filling all sixteen slots means sixteen kits.
