HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen10 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen10, new and refurbished. The server takes up to two Intel Xeon Scalable processors on the Intel C622 chipset, and two rules govern every order here: mixing two different processor models is not supported, and HPE does not support a field upgrade from a 1st generation part to a 2nd generation one.
DL180 Gen10 Processor Specifications
- Sockets and families: two sockets on the Intel C622 chipset, taking 1st or 2nd Generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors in Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze grades, each with 48 lanes of PCIe 3.0
- Generation lock: the second digit of the model number carries the generation — x1xx is 1st Generation and x2xx is 2nd — and HPE does not support a field upgrade between the two
- 2nd Generation kits listed for this server: Xeon-Gold from the four-core 5222 at 3.8GHz up to the 26-core 6230R, Xeon-Silver from the eight-core 4208 to the sixteen-core 4216, and Xeon-Bronze 3204 and 3206R
- Memory speed by grade: Bronze holds DDR4 at 2133 MT/s and Silver at 2400 MT/s, while 2nd Generation Gold parts run at 2666 or 2933 MT/s depending on the SKU
- Single socket parts: the U-suffix processors, such as the Gold 6209U, are supported only in single socket configurations
- Kit contents: the first processor kit (-L21) includes three system fans and the second processor kit (-B21) adds two more, so a one-to-two processor upgrade brings its own cooling
The processor sets the memory ceiling as firmly as it sets the core count. A Bronze 3204 holds DDR4 at 2133 MT/s and a Silver 4210 at 2400 MT/s however fast the DIMMs are rated, while the Gold 6200 parts reach 2933 MT/s. A second processor must be the same model as the first, and it is what makes the other eight DIMM slots and the secondary riser usable.
How Much Processor Does the Configuration Need?
| Grade | Example | Cores and power | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 3204 at 1.9GHz | 6 cores, 85W | 2133 MT/s |
| Silver | 4210 at 2.2GHz | 10 cores, 85W | 2400 MT/s |
| Silver, higher clock | 4215R at 3.2GHz | 8 cores, 130W | 2400 MT/s |
| Gold, mainstream | 5218 at 2.3GHz | 16 cores, 125W | 2666 MT/s |
| Gold, top of the range | 6230R at 2.1GHz | 26 cores, 150W | 2933 MT/s |
The memory column is the one people skip, and it is the reason a processor choice outlives the processor. A Bronze 3204 holds the bus at 2133 MT/s and a Silver 4210 at 2400 MT/s, so a large DDR4-2933 build under either of them spends money the machine cannot use. The R-suffix parts are the other thing worth knowing: a 4215R gives eight cores at 3.2GHz for 130W where a 4214R gives twelve at 2.4GHz for 100W, which is a per-core licensing decision as much as a performance one.
Choosing the Right DL180 Gen10 Processor
- Both processors must be the same model. Mixing two different processor models is not supported, so adding a second CPU means matching the part already fitted.
- Check the generation before you buy. A field upgrade from a 1st generation x1xx part to a 2nd generation x2xx part is not supported, and the generation also decides which memory kits are legal in the server.
- A second processor unlocks more than cores. The other eight DIMM slots and the secondary riser's PCIe slots only become usable once it is installed.
- U-suffix parts are single socket only. A Gold 6209U or 6210U cannot be paired, whatever the two sockets suggest.
- The kit brings its own cooling. The first processor kit includes three fans and the second adds two, which is why a two-processor server runs five fans where a one-processor server runs three.

DL180 Gen10 Processors FAQ
Which processors does the DL180 Gen10 support?
Up to two Intel Xeon Scalable processors, 1st or 2nd Generation, in Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze grades. The 2nd Generation kits listed for this server run from the six-core Bronze 3204 to the 26-core Gold 6230R.
Can I mix different processors in a DL180 Gen10?
No. HPE does not support mixing two different processor models in the same server, so both sockets have to carry the same part.
Can a DL180 Gen10 be upgraded from a 1st Generation to a 2nd Generation Xeon Scalable processor?
No. HPE states that field upgrades from 1st generation x1xx processors to 2nd generation x2xx processors are not supported on this server.
Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes. The other eight DIMM slots and the secondary riser's PCIe slots only become available once the second processor is installed.
Do DL180 Gen10 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes, and they carry the system fans as well. The first processor kit includes three fans and the second processor kit adds two more.
Which processor gives the best memory speed on this server?
A Gold part. The 2nd Generation Gold 6200 SKUs, along with the Gold 5222 and 5220R, run DDR4 at 2933 MT/s, where Silver holds the bus at 2400 MT/s and Bronze at 2133 MT/s.
