HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 Networking Adapters

The ML110 Gen11 takes network adapters in its one OCP 3.0 slot and in up to four PCIe 5.0 slots on two risers and the motherboard. Two 1GbE ports embedded (Broadcom BCM5720), with a choice of an OCP or stand-up network card. HPE's QuickSpecs list 18 network adapters (Ethernet) for it.

How to choose an ML110 Gen11 network adapter

Rule 1

Decide the OCP 3.0 adapter first

The single OCP slot is shared: an OCP RAID controller (OROC) can only go in OCP 1, the same slot an OCP NIC uses.

HPE: “OCP-type RAID (OROC) controller is only supported on OCP 1 slot.” (page 30)

Rule 2

Match the cabling to the switch

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately.

HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber-optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 37)

Rule 3

Check the cooling

Networking cards of 100Gb or more may run the fans faster and louder, even at idle; HPE lists them among options to avoid in acoustic-sensitive sites.

HPE: “High performance networking cards equal or greater than 100Gb that may cause the fans to operate at higher speed and higher acoustic level to maintain optimum system cooling when system at idle status.” (page 37)

How many network adapters can an ML110 Gen11 take?

The ML110 Gen11 takes network adapters in its one OCP 3.0 slot and in up to four PCIe 5.0 slots on two risers and the motherboard. Two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots as standard, up to four with the riser kits, plus one OCP 3.0 PCIe Gen5 x16 slot. The single OCP slot is shared: an OCP RAID controller (OROC) can only go in OCP 1, the same slot an OCP NIC uses.

Does the ML110 Gen11 have network ports built in?

Two 1GbE ports embedded (Broadcom BCM5720), with a choice of an OCP or stand-up network card. Every CTO server has the embedded 2-port 1GbE BCM5720 ports, with a choice of an HPE OCP networking adapter and/or PCIe stand-up cards; the Performance model lists the same embedded ports.

Are cables or transceivers included?

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately. HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber-optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 37).

What does “Listed in QuickSpecs version 37” mean?
