HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 Networking Adapters

HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE network adapters for the HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11, new and refurbished, tested for compatibility before shipping. The server ships with two 1GbE ports on the motherboard and adds more through one OCP 3.0 x16 slot and two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots — four with the GPU riser kits. HPE lists nine PCIe adapters and nine OCP adapters for it, from 1GbE BASE-T to 100GbE QSFP28.

ML110 Gen11 Networking Adapter Specifications

  • Embedded: two 1GbE ports on a Broadcom BCM5720 controller, plus a front iLO service port
  • Slots: one OCP 3.0 slot with PCIe 5.0 x16; two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots by default (slot 1 full-height full-length, slot 4 full-height half-length), with slots 2 and 3 added by the GPU riser kits
  • PCIe adapters listed: 1GbE — Broadcom BCM5719 and Intel I350-T4 4-port BASE-T; 10GbE — Broadcom BCM57416 2-port BASE-T and BCM57412 2-port SFP+; 10/25GbE SFP28 — Broadcom BCM57414 2-port, Intel E810-XXVDA2 2-port and E810-XXVDA4 4-port, Mellanox MCX631102AS-ADAT 2-port; 100GbE — Intel E810-CQDA2 2-port QSFP28
  • OCP 3.0 adapters listed: 1GbE — Broadcom BCM5719 and Intel I350-T4 4-port BASE-T; 10GbE — Broadcom BCM57412 2-port SFP+ and BCM57416 2-port BASE-T; 10/25GbE SFP28 — Intel E810-XXVDA2 2-port, Mellanox MCX631432AS-ADAI 2-port, Broadcom BCM57414 2-port and BCM57504 4-port; 100GbE — Intel E810-CQDA2 2-port QSFP28
  • Cooling note: HPE states cards of 100Gb or more may cause the fans to run faster and louder to maintain cooling, even at idle
  • Cabling: direct attach cables for copper and transceivers and cables for fibre are separate purchases, per HPE

The OCP slot is shared with the OROC storage controllers — decide it first. The ML110 Gen11 has one OCP 3.0 slot, and HPE states OROC storage controllers are supported only in OCP slot 1. With an -o RAID controller fitted, network adapters go in the two default PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, or in the riser slots; with a -p controller, the OCP slot takes any listed adapter from 1GbE to 100GbE. HPE also states 100Gb cards may raise fan speed even at idle.

PCIe or OCP 3.0 on the ML110 Gen11?

SlotLanesTakesChoose it when
OCP 3.0 (slot 1 position)PCIe 5.0 x16One OCP3 adapter, 1GbE to 100GbE — or an OROC storage controllerThe OCP slot is not needed for an -o RAID controller; keeps both PCIe slots free
PCIe 5.0 x16, slot 1 (FHFL)x16Any listed PCIe adapter, a -p controller or an RTX A1000The OCP slot holds a storage controller, or a second adapter is needed
PCIe 5.0 x16, slot 4 (FHHL)x16Any listed PCIe adapter or a -p controllerA third card; half-length only
Slots 2 and 3 (riser kits)x16 eachAdded by the GPU Riser Kit and Second GPU Riser Kit; HPE recommends an adapter in slot 2 for thermal reasons when the riser is fittedA GPU build, or a server that has run out of default slots

On this server the OCP slot has a second job: HPE states OROC storage controllers are supported only in OCP slot 1. So the first question is whether the RAID controller is an -o card; if it is, network adapters go in the PCIe slots, and if it is not, the OCP slot is the natural home for the primary adapter with the same 1GbE-to-100GbE range as PCIe.

Choosing the Right ML110 Gen11 Networking Adapter

  • Settle the OCP slot first. An OROC storage controller and an OCP network adapter cannot both use it. Decide which, then place the rest.
  • Match the port type to the switch. BASE-T for existing copper, SFP+ or SFP28 for DAC or optics, QSFP28 for 100GbE — and buy the cables or transceivers separately.
  • Expect fan noise with 100GbE. HPE states cards of 100Gb or more may raise fan speed at idle; in a quiet office that is a reason to stop at 25GbE.
  • Count the slot, not the ports. The BCM57504 OCP card and the E810-XXVDA4 PCIe card each give four 25GbE ports from one slot.
  • Keep a slot for the riser build. If an L4 GPU is planned, it goes in the riser kit slots, and HPE recommends a PCIe adapter in slot 2 alongside it for thermal reasons.

The OCP slot is shared with the -o ML110 Gen11 storage controllers, so plan them together. See also memory, drives, processors and power supplies, or the full ML110 Gen11 parts listing for the riser kits and GPUs. The same Broadcom, Intel and Mellanox adapters serve the ML350 Gen11 and the ML30 Gen11; the previous generation is under ML110 Gen10 networking adapters. The rest of the range is under HPE ProLiant ML tower server parts, and every model under HPE parts by server model.

ML110 Gen11 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network adapters can I add to an ML110 Gen11?
One OCP 3.0 adapter and up to two PCIe adapters in the default slots, or up to four PCIe cards with the GPU riser kits fitted. The server also has two embedded 1GbE ports. Note that an OROC storage controller, if used, takes the OCP slot.

Does the ML110 Gen11 support 100GbE?
Yes. HPE lists the Intel E810-CQDA2 2-port QSFP28 100GbE adapter in both PCIe and OCP 3.0 form. HPE states cards of 100Gb or more may cause the fans to run faster and louder, even at idle.

Can I use an OCP network adapter and an OCP RAID controller together in an ML110 Gen11?
No. The server has one OCP 3.0 slot, and HPE states OROC storage controllers are supported only in OCP slot 1. With an -o controller fitted, network adapters go in the PCIe slots; with a -p controller, the OCP slot is free for a network adapter.

Which 25GbE adapters does HPE list for the ML110 Gen11?
For PCIe: Broadcom BCM57414 2-port, Intel E810-XXVDA2 2-port and E810-XXVDA4 4-port, and Mellanox MCX631102AS-ADAT 2-port. For OCP 3.0: Intel E810-XXVDA2, Mellanox MCX631432AS-ADAI, Broadcom BCM57414 2-port and BCM57504 4-port. All are SFP28.

Do the ML110 Gen11 network adapters include cables?
No. HPE states direct attach cables for copper and fiber transceivers and cables must be purchased separately. BASE-T adapters use standard RJ-45 copper cabling.

Which PCIe slots are available for network adapters in the ML110 Gen11?
Two by default: slot 1, a full-height full-length PCIe 5.0 x16, and slot 4, a full-height half-length PCIe 5.0 x16. The GPU Riser Kit adds slot 2 and the Second GPU Riser Kit adds slot 3, both x16, and HPE recommends an adapter in slot 2 for cooling when the riser is fitted.
