- Interface and carriers: 12G SAS and 6G SATA, in HPE SC carriers for the 2.5-inch bays and SCC carriers for the 3.5-inch bays
- M.2 boot: 6G SATA M.2 2280 modules, which need the HPE Universal SATA M.2 enablement kit and run on the S100i in software RAID only
The cage decides the drive, and some drives decide the cooling. Non-hot-plug LFF, hot-plug LFF and hot-plug SFF front ends cannot be mixed in one chassis, and the non-hot-plug bays take SATA only. HPE also requires the redundant fan kit and the 800W redundant power supply when a second cage runs 15K SAS drives, and again whenever a SAS SSD is fitted.

The large form factor cage holds fewer drives and far more terabytes, and that is the whole trade on this tower: eight 20TB LFF drives reach 160TB where sixteen SFF hard drives stop at 38.4TB, and the small form factor side wins it back on spindle count and on solid state capacity. Check the bays before ordering — an SFF drive will not seat in an LFF carrier, the non-hot-plug cage takes SATA only, and two different cage types are not allowed in the same chassis.
Choosing the Right ML110 Gen10 Drive
- Confirm the cage type first, the drive second. Mixing drive cage types is not allowed, so a second cage has to match the one already fitted.
- Some drive choices drag the fans and the power supply with them. HPE requires the redundant fan kit together with the 800W redundant power supply when a second drive cage is installed with 15K SAS drives, and again whenever a SAS SSD is fitted — budget for all three parts.
- Non-hot-plug bays are SATA only. That configuration runs on the embedded S100i, so SAS drives and hot-plug service need a different cage.
- Match the endurance class to the workload. HPE grades these SSDs Read Intensive, Mixed Use, Write Intensive and Very Read Optimized, and the difference is endurance rather than capacity.
- Blanks are not an accessory. Pre-configured models ship with the empty bays blanked for airflow, and LFF and SFF blank kits are listed here.
