How to choose a DL320 Gen12 network adapter

Rule 1

Match the cabling to the switch

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately.

HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber- optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 36)

Rule 2

Check the cooling

Ethernet adapters of 25Gb or faster and any InfiniBand adapter need high-performance fans (High Performance Fan Kit P71958-B21, seven fan kits per air-cooled server; six performance fan kits with direct liquid cooling).

HPE: “25 Gb or faster Ethernet adapter requires high performance fan selection.” (page 36)

Rule 3

Mind the slot rules

In the GPU server, HPE advises the network adapter in PCIe slot 1 or OCP slot A with 1 or 2 single-wide front GPUs (slots 4 and 6), and in PCIe slot 2 or OCP slot B with 1 double-wide GPU (slots 5 and 6).

HPE: “If 1 or 2 Single Wide GPU is installed in front, it is advisable to install the GPUs in PCIe slots 4 and 6, with the Ethernet adapter installed in OCP slot A.” (page 39)

DL320 Gen12 adapter questions

How many network adapters can a DL320 Gen12 take?

The DL320 Gen12 takes network adapters in its OCP 3.0 slots and in up to two PCIe 5.0 slots. Two rear PCIe 5.0 x16 FHHL slots, each on an optional riser chosen at order time.

Does the DL320 Gen12 have network ports built in?

No embedded network controller or ports; an OCP or stand-up network card is required. Every CTO server is ordered with a choice of OCP 3.0 or PCIe stand-up network adapters, which may need fan kits depending on the ambient temperature.

Are cables or transceivers included?

DAC cables or fiber transceivers and cables are bought separately. HPE: “Direct Attach Cable (DAC) for copper environments or fiber transceivers and cables for fiber- optic environments must be purchased separately.” (page 36).

What do “QuickSpecs version 22” and “earlier HPE edition” mean on the list?

An adapter tagged “Listed in QuickSpecs version 22” is in version 22 of HPE's QuickSpecs for the DL320 Gen12, the edition this page is built from. One tagged “Listed in an earlier HPE edition” was listed for this server in an earlier edition of HPE's QuickSpecs and is not in version 22.

Which Fibre Channel HBAs does HPE list for the DL320 Gen12?

HPE lists QLogic 32Gb and 64Gb Fibre Channel HBAs and Emulex 32Gb and 64Gb SecureHBAs under HPE Storage Adapters. HPE's QuickSpecs list 6 Fibre Channel HBAs for it, by model: SN1610Q, SN1620E, SN1700Q and SN1720E. They are in the Fibre Channel HBAs section of this page.

What if the adapter I need is out of stock?

Out of stock today does not mean unavailable: we can often source this part. Add it to a quote request and we reply with current pricing and availability. Every message, quotes included, is answered within 24 hours.
