HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen11 Networking Adapters

The DL20 Gen11 takes network adapters in its one OCP 3.0 slot and in one PCIe 5.0 slot on one riser. Four 1GbE RJ-45 ports embedded on all chassis types (the Broadcom BCM5719 Ethernet 1Gb 4-port BASE-T adapter); port 1 is shared by iLO and production data. HPE's QuickSpecs list 15 network adapters (Ethernet) for it.

How to choose a DL20 Gen11 network adapter

Rule 1

Decide the OCP 3.0 adapter first

At most one OCP network adapter can be selected.

HPE: “Notes: Max of 1 OCP Networking Adaptor can be selected.” (page 33)

Rule 2

Check the cooling

If iLO cannot read the temperature sensor of a component such as a third-party OCP card, it runs the fans at full speed, so the server is louder.

HPE: “When HPE iLO cannot detect a temperature sensor from a component—such as a third-party OCP card or optional hardware—it assumes the worst-case scenario to protect the server.” (page 46)

Mind the slot rules

Slot 3 is an internal OROC slot for OCP storage controllers; an internal OROC controller and an external OCP 3.0 network adapter can be fitted together.

Does the DL20 Gen11 have network ports built in?
