HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11 Drives
Genuine HPE drives for the HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen11, new and refurbished, tested for compatibility before shipping. The ML110 Gen11 is a storage-heavy tower for its class — up to 8 LFF or 16 SFF hot-plug bays, two onboard M.2 slots and a media bay for tape — and HPE lists a wide drive range for it, from 26TB helium hard drives to 15.36TB SAS SSDs. The chassis decides the form factor; the controller decides the interface.

Fast SAS drives need the Redundant Fan Kit, and the chassis sets the form factor. HPE requires the Redundant Fan Kit (P49984-B21) for SAS 10K and 15K SFF hard drives and for SAS4 24G SFF SSDs, and limits drives that draw 15W or more to a 25°C inlet. Basic Carrier for the SFF bays, Low Profile for the LFF bays, raw drives on the non-hot-plug chassis — and SATA M.2 and NVMe M.2 cannot be mixed in the onboard slots.

The LFF hot-plug chassis is the flexible one, because HPE allows its second cage to be either LFF or SFF; the SFF chassis is the one to choose for the highest drive count and the highest SSD capacity. On the embedded SATA controller HPE describes each cage as its own drive group, with the SFF cage split into two groups of four, which matters for how VROC RAID sets can be laid out.
Choosing the Right ML110 Gen11 Drives
- Match the carrier to the chassis. Basic Carrier for SFF bays, Low Profile for LFF bays, raw drives for the non-hot-plug model. Gen10 Smart Carrier drives are not listed for this server.
- Budget for the fan kit with fast SAS drives. HPE requires the Redundant Fan Kit for SAS 10K SFF hard drives and SAS4 24G SSDs; a build around them is a build with that kit.
- Do not mix in one array. Keep interface, endurance class and drive type consistent within a RAID set; HPE also states SATA M.2 and NVMe M.2 cannot be mixed.
- Choose endurance by workload. Read Intensive for read-heavy and boot use, Mixed Use where writes are sustained; see drive writes per day in HPE SSDs.
- Decide the boot device early. M.2 on the onboard slots, or the NS204i-u — and HPE states the NS204i-u is not supported on the non-hot-plug chassis and takes the embedded controller's port.
- Plan the tape bay separately. An internal LTO drive uses the media bay and needs the LTO Cable Kit plus a port on an MR216i or MR408i-o controller.

Up to 8 LFF or 16 SFF hot-plug drives, depending on the chassis and the optional second drive cage, plus two onboard M.2 slots. HPE's maximums are 208TB as 8 x 26TB LFF hard drives and 245.76TB as 16 x 15.36TB SFF SAS SSDs.
Does the ML110 Gen11 support NVMe drives?
In M.2 form. HPE lists PE9010 NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280 SSDs from 480GB to 1.92TB for the two onboard slots, with optional Intel VROC NVMe RAID 1, plus the NS204i-u boot device with its own two NVMe M.2 SSDs. The front bays take SAS and SATA drives.
What is the largest hard drive the ML110 Gen11 takes?
26TB, as a 7.2K SAS 12G or SATA 6G Business Critical Low Profile helium drive in the LFF hot-plug chassis. In the SFF chassis the largest hard drive listed is 2.4TB 10K SAS.
Do I need the Redundant Fan Kit for ML110 Gen11 drives?
For some of them. HPE requires the Redundant Fan Kit (P49984-B21) for SAS 10K and 15K SFF hard drives and for SAS4 24G SFF SSDs, and also for the NS204i-u boot device and for any GPU. SATA drives and SAS 12G SSDs carry no such requirement.
Can I mix LFF and SFF drives in an ML110 Gen11?
Yes, from the LFF hot-plug chassis. HPE states mixed LFF and SFF cages can be supported in one system and directs you to start from the LFF CTO server, adding an 8 SFF cage kit as the second cage. Mixing cage types is not supported on the non-hot-plug chassis.
