A dual-port 10 Gigabit adapter on a PCIe 3.0 x8 interface belongs in slot 1, 3 or 4; slots 2 and 5 are better spent on a Gigabit card that never needed the lanes.
Choosing the Right ML110 Gen10 Network Adapter
- Count the ports you already have. Two embedded Gigabit ports come with the server, so a card earns its slot at four ports, at 10 Gigabit, or on fibre — not for a third copper port alone.
- Leave a slot for the storage card. Every Smart Array option for this tower is a plug-in card, so a SAS array and a 10 Gigabit adapter account for two of the five slots before anything else is fitted.
- Budget the memory. HPE calls for a minimum of 2GB of server memory per adapter installed, which is worth checking on a machine with only six DIMM slots.
- Cables and transceivers are separate. The SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
- Match the media, not just the speed. A 562SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics between them, and a 562T will not take a fibre transceiver.
