HPE ProLiant DL60 Gen9 Storage Controllers

Genuine HPE Smart Array controllers, Smart Host Bus Adapters and cache hardware for the HPE ProLiant DL60 Gen9, new and refurbished. Storage starts on the embedded HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i, and on this server it is capped twice over: SATA only, and no more than four drives — which happens to be every bay the chassis has.

DL60 Gen9 Storage Controller Specifications

  • Embedded controller: HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i on entry and base models — SATA only, up to four SATA drives on the DL60 Gen9 at 6Gb/s, RAID 0, 1, 1+0 and 5, with no expander support
  • Smart Host Bus Adapters: the H240 with two internal 12Gb ports, and the H241 with two external 12Gb ports
  • Smart Array cards: the P440 with 4GB flash backed write cache on one internal 12Gb port, and the P441 with 4GB FBWC on two external ports
  • Cache protection: the 96W Smart Storage Battery with 145mm cable is mandatory with HPE Smart Array controllers, and one battery serves every Smart Array card in the server
  • Cable kits: separate 4LFF cable kits for the H240 and for the P440, one of which HPE requires depending on the combination of chassis and storage controller
  • Software licences: the B140i supports neither HPE Secure Encryption nor a SmartCache licence, so both of those call for a Smart Array card in a slot

The embedded controller is capped twice over. The Dynamic Smart Array B140i is SATA only and reaches four drives on this server, which happens to be every bay the chassis has. If the array needs SAS, 12Gb transfer or a write cache, the B140i cannot get there and an H240 or a P440 is the part to buy.

Which Controller Does a Four-Bay Array Need?

ControllerPortsReachWhat it adds
B140i (embedded)internal, SATAUp to 4 SATA drives at 6Gb/sRAID 0, 1, 1+0 and 5 without spending a slot
H240 Smart HBA2 internalSAS and SATA at 12Gb/sSAS support and 12Gb transfer, no cache
P440/4GB1 internalSAS and SATA at 12Gb/s4GB flash backed write cache
H241 and P4412 externalExternal 12Gb SAS enclosuresCapacity beyond the four internal bays

Read that as two separate steps. Moving from the B140i to an H240 buys SAS drives and 12Gb transfer but no cache; moving from an H240 to a P440 buys the 4GB flash backed write cache. There is no P840 on this platform and no reason for one — a single internal port covers four bays comfortably, which is why the larger cards never appear here. Once those four bays are full, the only direction left is outside the chassis on an H241 or a P441.

Choosing the Right DL60 Gen9 Storage Controller

  • If the array is SAS, the embedded controller is out. The B140i handles SATA only, whatever the drive count, and it has no expander support.
  • Budget for the Smart Storage Battery. HPE lists the 96W battery as mandatory with Smart Array controllers, and one of them covers every Smart Array card in the server.
  • A cable kit is part of the job. HPE requires one 4LFF kit chosen to match the chassis and controller, and the H240 and P440 kits are not interchangeable.
  • Internal and external are different cards. The H241 and P441 drive enclosures outside the chassis and will not serve the internal backplane.
  • Encryption and SmartCache need a Smart Array card. Neither licence is supported on the embedded B140i, so a software requirement can be the whole reason to add a controller.

DL60 Gen9 Storage Controllers FAQ

Which storage controller does the DL60 Gen9 come with?
An embedded HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i, fitted on both entry and base models. It supports up to four SATA drives at 6Gb/s with RAID 0, 1, 1+0 and 5.

Does the embedded B140i support SAS drives?
No. The B140i is a SATA-only controller. SAS drives need an H240 Smart Host Bus Adapter or a Smart Array P440 or P441 in a PCIe slot.

How many drives can a DL60 Gen9 controller address?
The embedded B140i handles up to four SATA drives on this server, which matches the four bays in the chassis. An H240 or a P440 covers the same four bays in SAS or SATA at 12Gb/s.

Do I need the Smart Storage Battery?
Yes, with any HPE Smart Array controller. HPE lists the 96W Smart Storage Battery as mandatory, and one battery is enough for every Smart Array card in the server.

Which cable kit does a DL60 Gen9 controller need?
Whichever 4LFF kit matches the controller. HPE lists separate 4LFF cable kits for the H240 Smart HBA and for the Smart Array P440, and requires one of them to be selected.

Can I add external storage to a DL60 Gen9?
Yes. The H241 Smart Host Bus Adapter and the Smart Array P441 each provide two external 12Gb SAS ports, which is the only way to grow past the four internal bays.
