HPE ProLiant DL60 Gen9 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant DL60 Gen9, new and refurbished. The server takes up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors on the Intel C610 chipset and is documented as upgradeable to two processors and 28 cores, with one rule governing every second-CPU order: mixing different processor models is not supported.
DL60 Gen9 Processor Specifications
- Sockets and families: two sockets on the Intel C610 chipset, taking Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 processors, upgradeable to two processors and 28 cores
- Twelve- and ten-core kits: the E5-2650Lv3 at 1.8GHz with 30MB of cache inside 65W, and the E5-2660v3 at 2.6GHz and E5-2650v3 at 2.3GHz, both 25MB at 105W with a 9.6GT/s QPI link
- Eight-core kits: the E5-2640v3 at 2.6GHz and 90W, the E5-2630v3 at 2.4GHz and 85W, and the low-power E5-2630Lv3 at 1.8GHz and 55W, each with 20MB of cache
- Six- and four-core kits: the E5-2620v3 at 2.4GHz and the E5-2609v3 at 1.9GHz, both 15MB at 85W, plus the four-core E5-2623v3 at 3.0GHz with 10MB at 105W
- Memory ceiling by processor: 1600MHz on the E5-2609v3, 1866MHz on the E5-2640v3, E5-2630v3, E5-2630Lv3, E5-2620v3 and E5-2623v3, and 2133MHz on the E5-2660v3, E5-2650v3 and E5-2650Lv3
- Kit contents and SKU rule: every CPU kit comes complete with heatsink and fans; HPE's configuration rule is one -L21 kit for a single-processor server and one -L21 plus one -B21 for two, with the extra fans a two-processor build needs included in the -B21 kit
The processor is the only thing that sets memory speed here. With one DIMM per channel there is no population penalty to plan around, so the DDR4 rating of the CPU is the clock you get. An E5-2609v3 holds the bus at 1600MHz however fast the modules are rated, while the E5-2660v3, E5-2650v3 and E5-2650Lv3 all reach 2133MHz.
How Much Processor Does a 1U Entry Server Need?
| Class | Example | Cores and power | Memory speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | E5-2609v3 1.9GHz | 6 cores, 85W | 1600MHz |
| Base | E5-2630v3 2.4GHz | 8 cores, 85W | 1866MHz |
| Base, high clock | E5-2623v3 3.0GHz | 4 cores, 105W | 1866MHz |
| Performance | E5-2660v3 2.6GHz | 10 cores, 105W | 2133MHz |
| Performance, low power | E5-2650Lv3 1.8GHz | 12 cores, 65W | 2133MHz |
The right-hand column carries more weight on this server than on most. Because the DL60 Gen9 runs one DIMM per channel, population never costs you memory speed and the processor is the only thing that sets it — an entry part holds the bus at 1600MHz no matter which kits are fitted. The E5-2650Lv3 is the outlier worth knowing: twelve cores and the full 2133MHz memory clock inside 65 watts, which in a 1U chassis cooled by three fans is an argument in itself.
Choosing the Right DL60 Gen9 Processor
- Both processors must be the same model. Mixing different processor models is not supported, so adding a second CPU means matching the one already fitted.
- A second processor unlocks the other half of the memory. With one processor installed only four of the eight DIMM slots are available; the second opens the rest.
- Match the processor to the memory you intend to buy. DDR4-2133 kits are documented for v3 processors and DDR4-2400 kits for v4, and there is no point pairing fast modules with a processor that caps the bus at 1600MHz.
- Watch the wattage in a 1U chassis. A pair of 105W parts leans on the cooling, and HPE notes that system performance may be reduced when running with a fan fault or above 30 degrees C.
- The kit brings its own cooling. Every processor option kit includes heatsink and fans, and the -B21 kit used for the second processor carries the additional fans that configuration requires.

DL60 Gen9 Processors FAQ
Which processors does the DL60 Gen9 support?
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 and E5-2600 v4 processors, up to two of them, and HPE documents the server as upgradeable to two processors and 28 cores. The v3 kits listed for it run from the four-core E5-2623v3 to the twelve-core E5-2650Lv3.
Can I mix different processors in a DL60 Gen9?
No. HPE does not support mixing different processor models in the same server, so both sockets have to carry the same part.
Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes. With one processor installed only four of the eight DIMM slots are available, so the second processor is what opens the rest of the memory capacity.
Do DL60 Gen9 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every CPU kit comes complete with heatsink and fans, and the -B21 kit used for a second processor includes the additional fans that a two-processor configuration needs.
What is the difference between the -L21 and -B21 processor kits?
They are the same processor in different roles. HPE's rule is one -L21 kit for a single-processor server, and one -L21 plus one -B21 when two processors are wanted, with the -B21 carrying the extra fans.
Which processor gives the best memory speed on this server?
Among the E5-2600 v3 parts, the E5-2660v3, E5-2650v3 and E5-2650Lv3 all hold memory at 2133MHz. The E5-2609v3 caps the bus at 1600MHz regardless of which DIMMs are fitted.
