HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen10 Drives

The HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen10 takes SFF SC drives in SAS, SATA or NVMe (SFF SCN, U.2 and U.3), and HPE also lists a SATA M.2 SSD. Every model ships with 8 SFF bays in Box 1 and grows to 48 SFF with 8SFF bay kits. The controller decides the interface: the embedded S100i runs SATA drives only, an HPE Smart Array controller adds SAS, and NVMe drives need an NVMe or Premium drive cage with an NVMe riser option.

Which drives fit the DL580 Gen10

Every drive bay is SFF; the controller or the NVMe cage and riser decide the interface. HPE's maximum counts:

Which bays and controller? How to tell

  1. Count the populated drive boxes. Every model ships with 8 SFF bays in Box 1; each 8SFF HDD Bay Kit adds 8, up to 48. Box 4 may hold the Universal Media Bay instead.
  2. Match the server's product number to the product numbers shown here. The CTO servers ship with the embedded S100i; the pre-configured models also include a P408i-p Smart Array controller.
  3. Check the storage controller. An HPE Smart Array E208i-p, P408i-p or P824i-p runs SAS and SATA drives. With none, the embedded S100i runs SATA drives only.

Three rules before you order

SFF SC drives only

Every SFF drive HPE lists for the DL580 Gen10 is SFF SC; the NVMe drives are SFF SCN. HPE lists no LFF bays for this server.

The controller sets the interface

The S100i does not support SAS hard drives; the pre-configured models come with embedded software RAID support for 10 SATA drives and also include a P408i-p Smart Array controller. NVMe drives need an NVMe or Premium drive cage with an NVMe riser option, and HPE Smart Array controllers do not support them.

Follow HPE's NVMe layouts

HPE strongly encourages choosing an NVMe configuration by processor quantity and maximum NVMe drives, because other layouts can leave NVMe bays not functional. The 8 NVMe and 6 SFF plus 2 NVMe options go only in Box 1, 2 and 3, and in Box 1 the 8 NVMe option takes only the first 4 drives. The NVMe Slimline Riser (878360-B21) cannot be used with 2 processors.

What drives fit the HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen10?

SFF SC drives in SAS, SATA or NVMe (SFF SCN, U.2 and U.3). HPE also lists a SATA M.2 SSD and the Universal SATA 6G AIC HHHL M.2 SSD Enablement Kit. Which interfaces work depends on the controller and, for NVMe, on the drive cage and riser.

Do drives from a DL580 Gen8 or DL580 Gen12 fit the DL580 Gen10?

The DL580 Gen8 QuickSpecs lists SmartDrive SFF SC drives, such as 759212-B21, which is not on the DL580 Gen10 list. The DL580 Gen12 QuickSpecs lists SFF BC and E3S EC1 EDSFF drives, which are different carriers. Check that HPE lists the part number for the DL580 Gen10.

Does the DL580 Gen10 support NVMe drives?

Yes, up to 20: 4 in Box 1, 8 in Box 2 and 8 in Box 3, or 2, 8 and 8 plus 2 in the Universal Media Bay. They need an NVMe or Premium drive cage with an NVMe riser option. HPE Smart Array controllers do not support NVMe drives.

How many drives does the DL580 Gen10 hold?

Up to 48 SFF drives, by HPE's count, with 8SFF HDD Bay Kits (878366-B21) in all six boxes. Up to 20 of them can be NVMe.

Can I run SATA drives without a RAID controller?

Yes. The CTO servers come with the embedded S100i, which supports SATA drives only. It operates in UEFI mode only and is off by default; HPE FIO Enable Smart Array SW RAID (784308-B21) enables it.

What boot and optical options does the DL580 Gen10 have?

HPE lists the NS204i-p NVMe PCIe3 OS Boot Device (P12965-B21). A 9.5mm SATA DVD-ROM or DVD-RW needs the Universal Media Bay Kit (872267-B21), which fits Box 4 only and not with the 48 SFF front end. The HPE Mobile USB DVD-RW is external.
