HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 Storage Controllers
Genuine HPE Smart Array controllers, Smart Host Bus Adapters and cache protection for the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9, new and refurbished. One fact decides most orders here: the embedded Dynamic Smart Array B140i is SATA only and addresses at most ten drives, so any SAS array, and any array past ten spindles, needs a card.
DL560 Gen9 Storage Controller Specifications
- Embedded controller: HPE Dynamic Smart Array B140i, ten SATA links at 6Gb/s, up to ten drives, RAID 0, 1, 10 and 5, UEFI boot mode only
- Dedicated AROC slot: an Adaptive RAID on Chip connector separate from the seven PCIe slots, taking the P440ar with 2GB flash backed write cache or the H240ar Smart Host Bus Adapter
- Factory fit by model: B140i on Entry models, P440ar/2GB on Base, Smart Array P840 with 4GB flash backed write cache on Performance
- Internal PCIe cards: Smart Array P440 with 4GB cache and one internal port, P840 with 4GB and two
- External PCIe cards: Smart Array P441 with two external ports and P841 with four, both with 4GB flash backed write cache, plus the H241 external Smart Host Bus Adapter
- Cache protection: the 96W Smart Storage Battery with 145mm cable backs the flash backed write cache on the Smart Array cards, ordered separately
The embedded controller is SATA only. The Dynamic Smart Array B140i handles up to ten SATA drives and no SAS at all, so a SAS array — or any array past ten spindles — means a Smart Array card or a Smart Host Bus Adapter. The P440ar and H240ar fit the dedicated AROC connector and leave all seven PCIe slots free.
Which controller does your array need?
| Controller | Where it fits | Ports | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| B140i (embedded) | System board | SATA, up to 10 drives | SATA boot and small SATA arrays, UEFI mode |
| P440ar / H240ar | AROC slot | 2 internal | SAS on the internal bays without a PCIe slot |
| P440 / P840 | PCIe slot | 1 or 2 internal | Sixteen or 24 bays and a larger write cache |
| P441 / P841 / H241 | PCIe slot | 2 or 4 external | External SAS enclosures |
The Adaptive RAID on Chip slot is what separates this platform from a two-socket machine of the same era. The P440ar and H240ar drop into a connector of their own and leave all seven PCIe slots free, which matters on a server where slots four to seven belong to the second processor and stay dark until it is installed. If the card is going into a riser instead, check which bay it has to reach: the SAS expander and the Mini SAS cable kits for this chassis are listed here without live pricing and render a quote link.
Choosing the Right DL560 Gen9 Storage Controller
- SAS means a card, always. The B140i handles SATA and nothing else, so the drive type you have already chosen decides this for you.
- Take the AROC slot before a PCIe slot. The -ar cards use the dedicated connector; a P440 or P840 in a riser costs a slot the machine may want for networking.
- Internal and external are different cards. A P441 or P841 will not drive the internal backplane however much cache it carries, and a P440 will not reach an enclosure.
- Flash backed write cache needs its battery. The 96W Smart Storage Battery is a separate part number from the controller.
- Legacy boot needs a card too. The B140i operates in UEFI mode only, so a server that must boot in legacy BIOS mode needs an additional controller.

DL560 Gen9 Storage Controllers FAQ
Which RAID controller does a DL560 Gen9 come with?
It depends on the model. Entry models shipped the embedded B140i, Base models the Flexible Smart Array P440ar with 2GB flash backed write cache, and Performance models the Smart Array P840 with 4GB.
Can the B140i run SAS drives?
No. The B140i is SATA-only, with ten links and a ten-drive maximum. Any SAS drive needs a Smart Array controller or a Smart Host Bus Adapter.
What is the AROC slot?
The Adaptive RAID on Chip connector, a dedicated controller slot separate from the seven PCIe slots. The P440ar and H240ar fit there, adding a controller without using a riser slot.
What RAID levels does the DL560 Gen9 support?
The embedded B140i supports RAID 0, 1, 10 and 5 on SATA drives. The Smart Array cards add the higher levels and the flash backed write cache that makes parity writes reasonable.
Do I need the Smart Storage Battery?
If the controller has flash backed write cache, yes. The 96W Smart Storage Battery with 145mm cable preserves cache contents through a power loss, and it is a separate part number.
What is the difference between H240 and P440?
The H240 family are Smart Host Bus Adapters, presenting drives with minimal RAID for software-defined storage. The P440 family are Smart Array RAID controllers with flash backed write cache.
