HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR4 SmartMemory for the HPE ProLiant DL560 Gen9, new and refurbished. This is a four-socket server with 48 DIMM slots — twelve per processor, four channels each, three DIMMs per channel — and the slots belong to the processors, so a machine running one processor can only use a quarter of them however many kits you order.
DL560 Gen9 Memory Specifications
- Type: HPE SmartMemory DDR4 Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM) at DDR4-2133 and DDR4-2400; UDIMMs are not supported on this server
- Slots: 48 in total, twelve per processor across four channels at three DIMMs per channel — twelve usable with one processor installed, 24 with two, all 48 with four
- Maximum registered: 1.5TB, using 48 x 32GB dual-rank RDIMMs at 2400MT/s
- Maximum load reduced: 6TB, using 48 x 128GB octal-rank LRDIMMs at 2400MT/s
- Rank ceiling: RDIMM population is limited to eight logical ranks per channel, so only two quad-rank RDIMMs fit a channel; LRDIMM rank multiplication is what allows a third DIMM per channel
- Protection modes: Advanced ECC, Online Spare, inter-socket Mirroring, demand and patrol scrubbing, failed DIMM isolation and memory thermal control
Count the processors before you count the gigabytes. Twelve of the 48 DIMM slots belong to each installed processor, so a single-processor DL560 Gen9 can use twelve kits and no more, whatever is ordered. RDIMMs and LRDIMMs cannot be mixed either, and converting a machine from one to the other means replacing all 48 modules.
Should you fit RDIMMs or LRDIMMs?
| Registered (RDIMM) | Load Reduced (LRDIMM) | |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum capacity | 1.5TB | 6TB |
| Kit sizes stocked | 8GB, 16GB, 32GB | 32GB, 64GB, 128GB |
| Speed at three DIMMs per channel, v4 processors | 1600 to 1866MT/s | 1866 to 2133MT/s |
| Mixing with the other type | Not supported | Not supported |
Above roughly a terabyte and a half the decision makes itself, because registered modules simply stop there. Below it, RDIMMs are the cheaper route per gigabyte and the 8GB to 32GB kits cover most rebuilds. What makes this choice expensive to get wrong is that the two technologies cannot be mixed: converting a DL560 Gen9 from one to the other means replacing every module in it, and on a 48-slot server that is a large order rather than a top-up.
Choosing the Right DL560 Gen9 Memory
- Count the installed processors before the gigabytes. Twelve slots are usable per processor, so a kit count sized for a full machine strands three quarters of itself in a single-processor server.
- Balance the capacity across every installed processor. HPE's population guidance is to keep total memory even between processors and to fill slots in the documented alphabetical order rather than filling one processor first.
- Gen9 SmartMemory only. HPE does not qualify or warrant memory from earlier generation servers in this machine, and the performance and management features listed for Gen9 depend on SmartMemory.
- The processor sets the ceiling on speed. An E5-4610v3 holds the memory to 1600MT/s and an E5-4610v4 to 1866MT/s, where the faster v4 parts reach 2400MT/s; the DIMM cannot run quicker than the processor allows.
- Every kit listed here is a single DIMM. A 512GB upgrade in 32GB modules is sixteen kits, not one boxed set.

How many slots you can actually use is decided by the processor count — see DL560 Gen9 processors before sizing an order. DL560 Gen9 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in a DL560 Gen9?
6TB, reached with 48 x 128GB octal-rank LRDIMMs at 2400MT/s in a four-processor server. With registered DIMMs the ceiling is 1.5TB, using 48 x 32GB dual-rank modules.
How many memory slots does a DL560 Gen9 have?
Forty-eight, arranged as twelve per processor across four channels at three DIMMs per channel. Twelve are usable with one processor installed, 24 with two and all 48 with four.
Can I mix RDIMMs and LRDIMMs in a DL560 Gen9?
No. Registered and load reduced are distinct technologies and cannot be mixed in the same server. Mixing them can halt the machine during BIOS initialisation rather than simply running slower.
Does the DL560 Gen9 support unbuffered memory?
No. UDIMMs are not supported on this platform. The only two options are HPE SmartMemory RDIMMs and LRDIMMs.
Why is my DL560 Gen9 memory running below 2400MT/s?
Either the processor or the population is holding it back. An E5-4610v4 tops out at 1866MT/s whatever the DIMM, and filling a third DIMM per channel drops registered modules to 1600 or 1866MT/s and load reduced modules to 1866 or 2133MT/s.
Can I use memory from an older ProLiant in a DL560 Gen9?
HPE does not qualify or warrant memory from previous generation servers in this machine. Gen9 SmartMemory is what the documented performance and management features depend on.
