- Second cage: the optional +8SFF bay needs its own storage controller and removes optical drive support — the optical bay is an 8SFF and 8LFF feature
The chassis decides the drive. HPE states the 8LFF, 12LFF and 25SFF drive cage versions are not field upgradeable from the 8SFF model, so an 8SFF server grows by adding the optional second 8SFF cage — 16 bays, and its own storage controller — not by swapping in a bigger cage.

Buy to the backplane, not to the label on the drive. 12G SAS parts are listed for this server but HPE is explicit that they run at 6G here, and it notes that drive, controller, firmware and backplane should run at the same rate or the subsystem negotiates down. Choosing the Right DL380p Gen8 Drives
- Start from the chassis. An 8SFF server takes a second 8SFF cage and its own controller; it does not become a 25SFF server.

- Keep each array uniform. Mixing interfaces, spindle speeds or endurance classes leaves it running to its weakest member.

It depends which chassis you have. HPE lists 8 SFF, 8 LFF, 12 LFF and 25 SFF versions, and the 8SFF version accepts an optional second cage for 16 SFF bays. No hard drives ship standard.
What is the maximum internal storage of the DL380p Gen8?
HPE quotes 50.0TB from 25 x 2TB SFF hard drives, 96.0TB from 12 x 8TB LFF hard drives, 96TB from 25 x 3.84TB SATA SSDs and 48.0TB from 25 x 1.92TB SAS SSDs. With a D2700 attached, the quoted total reaches 270TB.
Can the DL380p Gen8 use 12G SAS drives?
Yes, and the QuickSpecs list them. HPE also states plainly that all 12G SAS hard drives only operate at 6G speeds in the DL380p Gen8, because the components of the storage subsystem negotiate down to the slowest member of the path.
Can I convert an 8SFF DL380p Gen8 into a 25SFF model?
No. HPE states the 8LFF, 12LFF and 25SFF drive cage versions are not field upgradeable options from the 8SFF model. The supported expansion is the optional second 8SFF cage, which takes the server to 16 SFF bays and requires an additional internal storage controller.
What carrier do DL380p Gen8 drives use?
The Gen8 SmartDrive (SC) carrier. HPE re-designed both the SFF 2.5-inch and LFF 3.5-inch hot-plug carriers for Gen8 with status, activity and Do Not Remove indicators, so a drive needs one to seat in this backplane.
Do DL380p Gen8 drives come with a warranty?
HPE states that hard drives carry either a one year or three year warranty depending on the drive, and points to the specific hard drive QuickSpecs for details. Midline 7.2K parts are generally the one-year models; enterprise and SSD parts are generally three-year.
