HPE ProLiant DL380 G7 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant DL380 G7, new and refurbished. The server already has four Gigabit ports on board — two embedded NC382i dual-port Multifunction adapters — so an add-in card here is about adding 10 Gigabit, adding fibre, or adding port count beyond the four you have.

DL380 G7 Networking Specifications

  • Embedded networking: two HPE NC382i dual-port Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapters, four RJ-45 ports in total, with TCP/IP Offload Engine and support for Accelerated iSCSI
  • Management port: a separate HPE iLO 3 remote management NIC, independent of the four data ports
  • Expansion: up to six PCI Express Gen2 slots across the primary and optional secondary risers
  • Gigabit copper cards stocked: NC112T single port, NC360T dual port, NC375T quad port, NC365T four-port, and the NC382T dual-port Multifunction adapter
  • Gigabit fibre: the NC373F PCI-E Multifunction 1000SX adapter, for 1000BASE-SX optical runs
  • 10 Gigabit cards stocked: NC522SFP and NC523SFP dual-port, NC550SFP and NC552SFP dual-port, plus a 10GbE PCIe G2 dual-port network interface card
  • 10GbE requirements: HPE documents a minimum of 2GB of server memory per adapter, and direct attach copper cables or fibre transceivers must be bought separately

Check what you already have before buying a card. The DL380 G7 ships with four Gigabit ports from two embedded NC382i Multifunction adapters, and those carry a TCP/IP Offload Engine and Accelerated iSCSI support. An add-in adapter earns its slot when the need is 10 Gigabit, fibre, or more than four ports — not for iSCSI alone.

Do You Need an Add-in Adapter at All?

A good number of DL380 G7 upgrades turn out not to need a card. The four embedded ports carry TCP/IP offload and Accelerated iSCSI already, so if the requirement is storage traffic rather than raw bandwidth, the server may well be equipped for it. Buy a card when the need is 10 Gigabit, fibre, or more than four ports.

Choosing the Right DL380 G7 Network Adapter

  • Count the slots you have left. Six PCIe Gen2 slots sounds generous until a storage controller, a fibre channel card and a tape adapter are in place.
  • Budget the memory for 10GbE. HPE calls for at least 2GB of server memory per 10 Gigabit adapter fitted.
  • Cables and transceivers are separate. SFP+ cards ship bare: direct attach copper for short runs, or transceivers and fibre for longer ones.
  • Match the media, not just the speed. An SFP+ card and a 10GBASE-T switch port will not connect without the right optics in between.

DL380 G7 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network ports does a DL380 G7 have as standard?
Four. Two embedded HPE NC382i dual-port Multifunction Gigabit adapters provide four RJ-45 ports, and a fifth port serves iLO 3 management separately.

Does the DL380 G7 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in card. The NC522SFP, NC523SFP, NC550SFP and NC552SFP dual-port adapters are all listed for this server, along with a 10GbE PCIe Gen2 dual-port NIC.

Do 10GbE adapters need extra memory?
HPE documents a minimum of two gigabytes of server memory for each 10 Gigabit adapter installed, so a pair of cards assumes headroom in the memory configuration.

Are cables included with SFP+ adapters?
No. Direct attach copper cables for short runs, and transceivers plus fibre for longer ones, are bought separately from the adapter.

Can I use fibre Gigabit instead of copper?
Yes. The NC373F PCI-E Multifunction 1000SX adapter provides Gigabit over multimode fibre where the run is too long for copper.

Does the onboard adapter support iSCSI?
Yes. The embedded NC382i adapters carry a TCP/IP Offload Engine and support Accelerated iSCSI, so storage traffic does not always require an add-in card.
