HPE ProLiant DL380 G7 Hard Drives

Genuine HPE hot-plug hard drives for the HPE ProLiant DL380 G7, new and refurbished, tested before shipping. The drive cage fitted to your chassis decides everything: this server ships with eight 2.5-inch SFF bays, reaches sixteen with a second SFF cage, and takes six 3.5-inch LFF bays in the large form factor configuration instead.

DL380 G7 Drive Specifications

  • Standard bays: eight hot-plug small form factor (2.5-inch) SAS or SATA bays
  • SFF maximum: sixteen bays with the optional second SFF drive cage fitted
  • LFF option: a separate cage for six 3.5-inch SAS or SATA hot-plug bays, fitted instead of the SFF front end rather than alongside it
  • Maximum internal capacity: 19.2TB on sixteen 1.2TB SFF SAS drives, or 24.0TB on six 4TB LFF SATA drives
  • Solid state ceiling: 12.8TB on sixteen 800GB SFF SAS SSDs, or 6.4TB on 400GB SATA SSDs
  • Interface: 6G SAS and 3G or 6G SATA, controlled by the embedded Smart Array P410i or an add-in Smart Array card

The cage on the front of the chassis is the whole decision. Eight SFF bays as standard, sixteen with the optional second SFF cage, or six LFF bays in the large form factor configuration — and the two front ends are not interchangeable. Sixteen small drives reach 19.2TB; six large ones reach 24.0TB.

Which Drives Fit Your DL380 G7 Chassis?

Front endBaysDrive sizeMaximum capacity
SFF, as standard82.5-inch9.6TB on 1.2TB SAS
SFF, second cage fitted162.5-inch19.2TB on 1.2TB SAS
LFF cage63.5-inch24.0TB on 4TB SATA

The LFF configuration holds fewer drives but more terabytes, which is the whole trade: six large drives beat sixteen small ones on bulk capacity, and lose to them on spindle count and therefore on random throughput. Check the bays on the front of the machine before ordering — an SFF drive will not seat in an LFF carrier, and no adapter makes it do so.

Choosing the Right DL380 G7 Hard Drive

  • Confirm SFF or LFF first. It is the one mistake that cannot be worked around, and the front of the chassis answers it in a glance.
  • Match the whole storage path. HPE notes that the drive, the controller, the firmware and the backplane should all run at the same transfer rate, or the system negotiates down to the slowest of them.
  • SAS for transactional work, SATA midline for bulk. Enterprise SAS carries the higher spindle speeds and duty cycle; midline SATA carries the capacity per pound.
  • Solid state on this platform is 6G SAS or 3G SATA. These are earlier-generation SSDs with modest capacities by later standards, and they suit boot and cache roles better than primary bulk storage.

DL380 G7 Hard Drives FAQ

How many hard drives does a DL380 G7 hold?
Eight 2.5-inch SFF drives as standard, sixteen with the optional second SFF cage, or six 3.5-inch LFF drives with the large form factor cage fitted instead.

Does the DL380 G7 use 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives?
Either, depending on how the server was configured. The chassis is built with an SFF front end or an LFF front end, and the two are not interchangeable without changing the cage and backplane.

What is the maximum storage capacity of a DL380 G7?
19.2TB internally on sixteen 1.2TB SFF SAS drives, or 24.0TB on six 4TB LFF SATA drives. Solid state configurations reach 12.8TB on 800GB SAS SSDs.

Can I use SATA drives in a DL380 G7?
Yes. The server takes SAS or SATA hot-plug drives in either form factor. SAS is the usual choice where random performance matters; midline SATA is the cheaper route to bulk capacity.

Do I need HPE drive carriers?
Yes. Drives fit the server in HPE hot-plug carriers matched to the bay size, and the carrier is part of the drive assembly rather than a separate accessory.

Will a faster drive speed up an older array?
Not necessarily. HPE notes that the drive, controller, firmware and backplane all negotiate to a common rate, so a 6G drive on a 3G path runs at the slower speed.
