This server fills in pairs, and the pairs are fixed. DIMMs 1A and 3A must match, and 5B with 7B, 2C with 4C and 6D with 8D each install as a matched pair. That is why every option kit listed here contains two modules, and why a single DIMM cannot complete a bank on its own.

The last 14GB is the expensive one. Going from 50GB to 64GB means pulling two perfectly good 1GB DIMMs and replacing them with 8GB modules, so the upgrade is two extra modules and two spare ones left over. Decide which of those two configurations you are buying before you count kits.
Choosing the Right DL380 G5 Memory
- Buy in pairs, because the banks fill in pairs. Every option kit listed for this server is two DIMMs, and a single module cannot complete a bank on its own.
- Keep a bank identical. Interleaving requires identical DIMMs, so mixing two kit sizes inside one bank costs you the interleaving the server would otherwise configure automatically.
- Check the processor before paying for speed. The memory clock follows the front side bus, and a 1066MHz bus holds DDR2 at 533MHz whatever the modules are rated for.
- Online Spare and Mirrored Memory both cost capacity. Mirroring needs banks A and B fully populated with identical part numbers; Online Spare reserves the last populated bank.
- Low power kits exist at 2GB, 4GB and 8GB. Fully Buffered DIMMs run warm, and on a full eight-socket build the low power parts are worth asking for by part number.
