HPE ProLiant DL360p Gen8 Memory

HPE ProLiant DL360p Gen8 Memory

Genuine HPE SmartMemory for the HPE ProLiant DL360p Gen8, new and refurbished and tested before shipping. The platform carries 24 DDR3 DIMM slots — 12 per processor, four channels each, three DIMMs per channel — and only the slots of an installed processor are usable.

DL360p Gen8 Memory Specifications

  • Memory type: HPE SmartMemory DDR3 Registered (RDIMM), Load Reduced (LRDIMM) and Unbuffered (UDIMM) — distinct technologies, never mixed in one server
  • Slots: 24 total — 12 per processor, 4 channels each, 3 DIMMs per channel; with one processor installed only 12 are available
  • Kits offered: 4GB, 8GB and 16GB RDIMMs, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB UDIMMs and a 32GB quad-rank LRDIMM, one DIMM per kit
  • Speed: DDR3-1866, 1600 and 1333 kits in standard and PC3L low-voltage form, CAS-9 to CAS-13
  • The 3 DIMM-per-channel step-down: on E5-2600 v2, 1866 falls to 1333 MHz and 1600 low-voltage RDIMMs to 800 MHz; on E5-2600, 1600 falls to 1333 MHz and 1333 low-voltage RDIMMs to 1066 MHz
  • Maximum capacity: 768GB on LRDIMMs (24 × 32GB at 1066MHz), 384GB on RDIMMs (24 × 16GB at 1333MHz), 128GB on UDIMMs (16 × 8GB at 1333MHz)

The step-down depends on which processor generation you have. Both bandwidth tables hold native speed at 1 and 2 DIMMs per channel. At 3 DIMMs per channel the E5-2600 v2 table drops DDR3-1866 parts to 1333 MHz and DDR3-1600 low-voltage RDIMMs to 800 MHz, while the E5-2600 table drops DDR3-1600 to 1333 MHz and DDR3-1333 low-voltage RDIMMs to 1066 MHz.

How much memory can the DL360p Gen8 hold?

ConfigurationTotal capacityNotes
16 × 16GB RDIMM256GB2 DIMMs per channel — HPE's best-speed figure, at 1600MHz
24 × 16GB RDIMM384GBRDIMM ceiling, quoted at 1333MHz
16 × 8GB UDIMM128GBUDIMM ceiling — only 16 slots accept unbuffered DIMMs
24 × 32GB LRDIMM768GBThe stated platform maximum, quoted at 1066MHz

Read the third column against the processor you have: the two bandwidth tables step down differently, and both hold native speed only through 2 DIMMs per channel. HPE's own best-speed recommendation is 16 slots of 16GB — 256GB at 1600MHz — rather than all 24 filled.

Choosing the Right DL360p Gen8 Memory

  • The processor sets the ceiling. HPE rates the E5-2697 v2 through E5-2637 v2 group at 1866/1600MHz, the E5-2640 v2, E5-2630 v2, E5-2620 v2, E5-2650L v2 and E5-2630L v2 at 1600MHz, and the E5-2609 v2 and E5-2603 v2 at 1333MHz.
  • UDIMMs cost you slots. Only 16 of the 24 slots take unbuffered DIMMs and there is no 3 DIMM-per-channel column at all, which is why 128GB is their ceiling.
  • Only the LRDIMM reaches 32GB, so the stated 768GB means 24 quad-rank Load Reduced modules and nothing else.
  • Mixing rules: 1.35V and 1.5V RDIMMs mix in any order but the system powers them at 1.5V; different speeds mix and the server picks a common optimal speed.
  • Background reading: memory rank in HPE servers, why memory speed matters, and what CAS latency means.

DL360p Gen8 Memory FAQ

How much RAM does the HPE ProLiant DL360p Gen8 support?
The QuickSpecs state 768GB, quoted as 24 x 32GB at 1066MHz, and the only 32GB modules listed are quad-rank LRDIMMs. Registered DIMMs reach 384GB as 24 x 16GB at 1333MHz, and unbuffered DIMMs 128GB as 16 x 8GB at 1333MHz.

How many DIMM slots does the DL360p Gen8 have?
Twenty-four - twelve per processor, four memory channels per processor, three DIMMs per channel. If only one processor is installed, only 12 slots are available. HPE also notes that for maximum speed on some memory options, 16 slots may be populated.

What type of memory does the DL360p Gen8 use?
HPE SmartMemory DDR3 in Registered, Load Reduced or Unbuffered form. The option list runs 4GB, 8GB and 16GB RDIMMs, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB UDIMMs and a 32GB LRDIMM, listed separately for E5-2600 v2 and E5-2600. RDIMM, LRDIMM and UDIMM cannot be mixed in one server.

Why does DL360p Gen8 memory slow down when I fill every slot?
The third DIMM on a channel forces a step-down, and it differs by processor generation. On E5-2600 v2, DDR3-1866 drops to 1333 MHz and DDR3-1600 low-voltage RDIMMs to 800 MHz. On E5-2600, DDR3-1600 drops to 1333 MHz and DDR3-1333 low-voltage RDIMMs to 1066 MHz.

What memory configuration gives the best speed on a DL360p Gen8?
HPE's own guidance is two DIMMs per channel: 16 slots populated with 16GB modules for 256GB at 1600MHz. Both bandwidth tables hold native speed at 1 and 2 DIMMs per channel, so the step-down only starts with the third DIMM.

Can I use memory from an older HP server in a DL360p Gen8?
No. The QuickSpecs state that HPE memory from previous generation servers is not qualified or warranted with this server, and that HPE SmartMemory is required to realize the documented memory performance and functionality.
