HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Networking Adapters

Genuine HPE Ethernet server adapters for the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen10, new and refurbished. The server already carries two embedded Gigabit ports on an HPE 361i adapter, and only two PCIe 3.0 slots to add to them — so what fits, and which slot it fits in, matters more here than on a bigger server.

DL20 Gen10 Networking Specifications

  • Embedded networking: HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i Adapter on Intel i350 silicon, standard on Xeon E-2200, 9th generation Core i3 and Pentium G models
  • Primary riser: slot 1 is PCIe 3.0, eight lanes in an x8 connector, low profile; slot 2 is eight lanes in an x16 connector, full height half length
  • FlexibleLOM riser: the same two slots with slot 1 presented as a FlexibleLOM connector; the FlexibleLOM riser kit is required before an FLR adapter will fit
  • Shared iLO: with default iLO settings, port 1 of a FlexibleLOM adapter is configured as the shared iLO management port
  • Card families stocked: 1 Gigabit BASE-T on I350 silicon in two and four ports; 10 Gigabit BASE-T and SFP+ on X550-AT2, BCM57416, 57810S and X710; and 10/25 Gigabit SFP28 on MCX4121A and QL41401-A2G
  • Quantity limits: only one QL41401-A2G adapter, SFP28 or BASE-T; and two or more MCX4121A SFP28 adapters with an 8GB DIMM require the server to hold 16GB or more
  • Not supported: SR-IOV is not available on the DL20 Gen10

Two PCIe slots, and one of them will not take a quad-port copper card. HPE documents that the butterfly riser puts a 4-port RJ-45 card in slot 1 into conflict with the full-height bracket of slot 2, so that card belongs in slot 2. Slot 1 is low profile, and a plug-in storage controller takes one of the two outright.

Which Slot Will the Card Actually Fit?

RiserSlotLanes and connectorForm factor
Primary1PCIe 3.0, eight lanes in an x8 connectorLow profile
Primary2PCIe 3.0, eight lanes in an x16 connectorFull height, half length
FlexibleLOM1PCIe 3.0, eight lanes in an x8 connectorFlexibleLOM
FlexibleLOM2PCIe 3.0, eight lanes in an x16 connectorFull height, half length

Slot 2's x16 connector has eight electrical lanes behind it, so a card there gets half the lanes the connector implies. The trap here is physical rather than electrical: HPE documents that the butterfly riser will not take a 4-port RJ-45 PCIe card in slot 1, because it fouls the full-height bracket of slot 2. That card goes in slot 2 with a full-height bracket, or nowhere.

Choosing the Right DL20 Gen10 Network Adapter

  • Count the slots before the ports. Two PCIe 3.0 slots carry networking, plug-in storage controllers and Fibre Channel adapters between them, so a plug-in Smart Array leaves one.
  • A FlexibleLOM needs its own riser. The riser kit is a prerequisite, and once an FLR adapter is in, its port 1 becomes the shared iLO port unless iLO is reconfigured.
  • Watch the memory floor on a pair of 25Gb cards. HPE requires 16GB or more of system memory where two MCX4121A SFP28 adapters sit alongside an 8GB DIMM, and this platform stops at 64GB.
  • SR-IOV is not on the table. HPE documents that the DL20 Gen10 does not support it, so a design that depends on it needs a different server, not a different card.

The two slots are contested — see DL20 Gen10 storage controllers before committing one to networking, and DL20 Gen10 drives for what they serve, or the full DL20 Gen10 parts listing. The tower on the same platform has its own listing at HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen10 networking adapters. Where two slots are not enough, we also stock the 1U HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen10 and HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10. Every model we carry is listed under HPE parts by server model.

DL20 Gen10 Networking Adapters FAQ

How many network ports does a DL20 Gen10 have as standard?
Two. The embedded HPE Ethernet 1Gb 2-port 361i adapter provides two RJ-45 Gigabit ports on every chassis type, plus a dedicated 1Gb iLO management port as an option kit.

Does the DL20 Gen10 support 10 Gigabit Ethernet?
Yes, through an add-in card. BASE-T and SFP+ 10 Gigabit adapters are listed, as are 10/25 Gigabit SFP28 cards, in standard PCIe and FlexibleLOM forms.

Why will my 4-port network card not fit slot 1?
HPE documents a design limitation of the butterfly riser: a 4-port RJ-45 PCIe card in slot 1 interferes with the full-height bracket of slot 2. It can only go in slot 2, with a full-height bracket.

How many PCIe slots does the DL20 Gen10 have for adapters?
Two, both PCIe 3.0 at eight electrical lanes. Slot 1 is low profile in an x8 connector, slot 2 is full height half length in an x16 connector, and storage controllers and Fibre Channel adapters compete for the same two.

What do I need for a FlexibleLOM adapter?
The FlexibleLOM riser kit, which replaces the primary riser. Note that with default iLO settings, port 1 of that adapter becomes the shared iLO port.

Does the DL20 Gen10 support SR-IOV?
No. HPE states that the ProLiant DL20 Gen10 does not support networking SR-IOV, whichever adapter is fitted.
