A 115W processor is a chassis decision. HPE requires the 1500W Common Slot Platinum Plus hot-plug power supply kit in the s6500 before an E5-2670 or E5-2665 is supported, and that supply is a chassis part, not a tray part. Both sockets must also carry the same model — mixing different processors in one tray is not supported.

Which wattage class will the chassis carry?

Wattage is a chassis question on this platform, not a tray question. HPE requires the 1500W Common Slot Platinum Plus hot-plug power supply kit in the s6500 before a 115W processor such as the E5-2670 or E5-2665 is supported, and it does not list 130W parts as a standard configuration here at all. With eight trays drawing on the same supplies, the class of processor chosen for one node sets the budget for every node beside it.

Choosing the Right SL230s Gen8 Processor

• Both sockets must carry the same part. Mixing different processor models is not supported, so upgrading to two CPUs means two kits of the same model unless the fitted one is being replaced.
• 115W processors carry a chassis requirement. The 1500W Common Slot Platinum Plus supply has to be in the s6500 before an E5-2670 or E5-2665 is supported, and that is a chassis part rather than a tray part.
• The processor sets the memory ceiling. Entry parts run DDR3 at up to 1066MHz, base parts at up to 1333MHz and performance parts at up to 1600MHz, whatever the DIMMs are rated at.
• A second processor unlocks eight more DIMM slots. With one CPU fitted only half the sixteen slots are available, which is often the real reason to add one.
• Low-power parts exist at both core counts. The 60W E5-2630L gives six cores and the 70W E5-2650L gives eight, which is what a dense chassis usually wants more than peak clock.
