HPE ProLiant DL580 G7 Memory
Genuine HPE DDR3 memory and memory cartridges for the HPE ProLiant DL580 G7, new and refurbished. Memory on this server does not plug into the board: it plugs into eight removable memory cartridges, eight DIMMs apiece, and a cartridge slot that has no cartridge in it is 8 of your 64 slots sitting idle.
DL580 G7 Memory Specifications
- Type: DDR3 PC3-10600R registered DIMMs, in standard-voltage PC3 and low-voltage PC3L parts — unbuffered UDIMMs are not supported at all
- Slots: 64 in total, eight per memory cartridge across eight cartridge slots in the front-accessible processor and memory drawer
- Maximum capacity: 2TB with sixty-four 32GB modules on Intel Xeon E7 series processors; Xeon 7500 series machines are capped at 1TB
- Kits stocked: single-DIMM registered kits from 2GB to 32GB, including PC3L-10600 and PC3L-8500 low-voltage parts
- Memory cartridge: the HPE DL580G7/DL980G7 (E7) Memory Cartridge, four fitted as standard on the (E7) configure-to-order server and eight supported per chassis
- Protection modes: Advanced ECC, mirrored memory and online spare on all models, with Double Device Data Correction on E7-48xx and E7-88xx processors
Sixty-four slots only exist if eight cartridges do. Each processor is wired to two of the eight cartridge slots and each cartridge holds eight DIMMs, so a server that grew to four processors on the four cartridges it shipped with has 32 slots, not 64. Unbuffered DIMMs are not supported at all — every slot takes PC3-10600R registered memory.
How Many Memory Cartridges Does Your Configuration Need?
| Processors fitted | Cartridge slots wired | Cartridges for best performance | DIMM slots available |
|---|---|---|---|
| One | 1 and 2 | 2 | 16 |
| Two | 1 to 4 | 4 | 32 |
| Three | 1 to 6 | 6 | 48 |
| Four | 1 to 8 | 8 | 64 |
Each processor is wired to exactly two cartridge slots, and HPE recommends both of them be populated so the processor can enter hemisphere mode and interleave across its two internal memory controllers. The configure-to-order server shipped with four cartridges, so a machine that has grown to four processors frequently needs cartridges before it needs DIMMs — and a processor installed without its cartridges runs with high memory access latency rather than simply less capacity.
Choosing the Right DL580 G7 Memory
- Registered only. HPE states plainly that UDIMMs are not supported in this server, so the only question is which registered kit, not which type.
- DIMMs go in as identical pairs, in a fixed order. The minimum is two per cartridge, and pairs are filled by letter: 1A and 8A first, then 3B and 6B, then 2C and 7C, and 4D and 5D last.
- Adding DIMMs does not slow the memory down. Speed on this platform is a function of the processor's QPI speed alone — 6.4GT/s runs memory at 1066MHz, 5.6GT/s at 978MHz and 4.8GT/s at 800MHz — and registered 1066 and 1333 parts both run at 1066.
- PC3L low-voltage kits are E7 territory. They need an Intel Xeon E7 series processor and the (E7) memory cartridge; a Xeon 7500 series chassis takes standard-voltage PC3 parts.
- Spread capacity evenly across the processors. Four or eight DIMMs per cartridge is the sweet spot for hemisphere mode, and 32-DIMM and 64-DIMM totals are the configurations HPE calls out as highest performing.
Complete Your DL580 G7 Build
The processor family sets the memory ceiling, so check the DL580 G7 processors before deciding how far a build can go. DL580 G7 Memory FAQ
What is the maximum memory in a DL580 G7?
2TB, using sixty-four 32GB registered DIMMs across eight fully populated memory cartridges. That ceiling applies only to Intel Xeon E7 series processors - a Xeon 7500 series server is limited to 1TB.
Can I use unbuffered memory in a DL580 G7?
No. HPE states that UDIMMs are not supported in this server. All 64 slots take PC3-10600R registered DDR3 modules.
Do I need to buy memory cartridges as well as DIMMs?
Often, yes. The configure-to-order server shipped with four cartridges and supports eight, so a server that has gained processors may have cartridge slots with nothing in them. Each cartridge holds up to eight DIMMs.
How many memory cartridges should each processor have?
Two. Each processor is wired to two cartridge slots, and populating both is what lets it enter hemisphere mode and interleave across both of its memory controllers. One cartridge per processor is the documented minimum.
Does filling all 64 slots slow the memory down?
No. On this platform memory speed is set by the processor's QPI speed and is not affected by the number of DIMMs or ranks fitted. A 6.4GT/s processor runs memory at 1066MHz whether 8 DIMMs are installed or 64.
Can I use PC3L low-voltage memory in a DL580 G7?
Only with Intel Xeon E7 series processors, and only with the (E7) memory cartridge. A Xeon 7500 series machine needs standard-voltage PC3 modules.
