HPE ProLiant WS460c Gen8 Processors
Genuine HPE processor option kits for the HPE ProLiant WS460c Gen8, new and refurbished. The blade takes one or two Intel Xeon E5-2600 or E5-2600 v2 series processors on the Intel C600 chipset, and on a graphics blade the second socket does more than add cores — it is what makes mezzanine expansion slot 2, the slot the Quadro K3100M graphics module uses, accessible at all.

- Features: Intel Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost on every model except the E5-2603 and E5-2609; an L denotes lower wattage
- Kit contents: every kit listed here is complete with heatsink and fan or fans
On a graphics blade the second processor is a graphics decision. A processor must be installed in socket 2 before mezzanine expansion slot 2 is accessible, and slot 2 is where the Quadro K3100M module goes. The family matters too: HPE lists the GRID K1, the GRID K2 and the MultiGPU carrier as available only with an E5-2600 v2 configuration.
How many cores, and at what memory speed?
| Processor models | Cores | Supported memory speeds |
|---|---|---|
| E5-2600 v2 series, E5-2697 v2 to E5-2609 v2 | 4 to 12 | 1866MHz SmartMemory, or 1600MHz at low voltage |
| E5-2680, E5-2670, E5-2667, E5-2665, E5-2660, E5-2650, E5-2650L, E5-2637 | 2 to 8 | 1600, 1333 or 1066MHz |
| E5-2640, E5-2630, E5-2630L, E5-2620 | 6 | 1333 or 1066MHz |
| E5-2609, E5-2603 | 4 | 1066MHz |
The processor family also gates the graphics, which is what makes this blade different from a general-purpose one. HPE lists the NVIDIA GRID K1, the GRID K2 and the MultiGPU carrier as available only with an E5-2600 v2 configuration, so a blade on E5-2600 series silicon is limited to the Quadro and Tesla cards and the MXM mezzanine modules. The families split on memory too: v2 parts run 1866MHz or 1600MHz low voltage SmartMemory and nothing else.
Choosing the Right WS460c Gen8 Processor
- Both sockets must carry the same part. HPE states that all processors within the server must be identical and that mixing different processor models is not supported.
- A second processor does three things here. It adds cores, it opens the other eight DIMM slots, and it makes mezzanine slot 2 usable — which on this blade is the graphics slot.
- Check the memory before choosing the CPU. The E5-2620 does not support DIMMs at 1.35V, so a blade full of low voltage PC3L modules rules it out unless RBSU runs them at 1.5V.
- Five models close two DIMM slots. With an E5-2690, E5-2643, E5-2643 v2, E5-2637 v2 or E5-2667 v2 fitted, slots 4 and 5 are inaccessible, leaving twelve usable DIMM slots in a two-processor blade.
- Hyper-Threading is not universal. The E5-2603 and E5-2609 carry neither Hyper-Threading nor Turbo Boost, which matters more than clock speed on a blade hosting several workstation sessions.

WS460c Gen8 Processors FAQ
Which processors does the WS460c Gen8 support?
Intel Xeon E5-2600 and E5-2600 v2 series, one or two of them on the Intel C600 chipset, running from the twelve-core E5-2697 v2 down to the two-core E5-2637.
Can I mix different processors in a WS460c Gen8?
No. HPE states that all processors within the server must be identical and that mixing different processor models is not supported. Both sockets carry the same part number.
Does adding a second processor do anything besides add cores?
Yes, two things. It makes the other eight DIMM slots usable, and it is required before mezzanine expansion slot 2 will work - which on this blade is the slot a Quadro K3100M graphics module occupies.
Do the graphics options depend on the processor family?
Some do. HPE lists the NVIDIA GRID K1, the GRID K2 and the MultiGPU carrier as available only with an E5-2600 v2 configuration. The Quadro and Tesla cards and the MXM mezzanine modules carry no such restriction.
Do WS460c Gen8 processor kits include a heatsink?
Yes. Every processor option kit listed for this blade comes with heatsink and fan or fans.
Which processors support Hyper-Threading and Turbo Boost?
All of them except the E5-2603 and E5-2609, which carry neither. An L after the model number denotes a lower wattage part, such as the 70W E5-2650L and the 60W E5-2630L v2.
