The second socket has to match the first, and it does more than add cores. HPE does not support mixing different processor models in one server, so an upgrade to two processors is two of the same kit. Six of a node's twelve DIMM slots are dedicated to each socket, which makes the second processor the thing that opens the rest of the 192GB.

All four carry the same 8MB of level 3 cache and the same 1600MHz memory ceiling, which leaves cores, clock and watts as the whole decision. The 4238 holds the highest clock, the 4284 the most cores, and the 4274 HE is the only part under 95W — which matters more here than on a standalone server, because one set of chassis supplies carries every node.

Choosing the Right SL4545 G7 Processor

  • Both sockets in a node must carry the same part. HPE does not support mixing different processor models, so adding a second processor means a matching kit rather than a better one.
  • The second processor opens the other six DIMM slots. Six of a node's twelve slots are dedicated to each socket, so a single-processor node reaches half the 192GB ceiling whatever modules are fitted.
  • Buy per node, not per chassis. A 3x15 chassis holds three independent two-socket servers, and each is configured on its own.
  • Watch the chassis power budget rather than the node's. One set of Common Slot supplies feeds every node, so three nodes of 95W parts is a very different draw from three of the 65W 4274 HE.
  • The kits arrive complete. Heatsink and fans are in the box, so no separate thermal kit is needed alongside them.

Which processors does the SL4545 G7 support?
